Current Biology has a free special issue on the history of life on Earth, with primers and reviews. (Scroll down a bit.)

Current Biology

There are downloadable PDFs of each article.

I am just getting started reading these articles, but I can already see that they will be a great reference library. There are 17 articles and a total of 119 pages.

I put them all together in one PDF to make it more manageable (like a single book) on my laptop, desktop and phone so I will always have it with me if I need something to read. I usually carry a book with me for waiting rooms or waiting in the car while my wife is shopping, etc.
