Hello Percy,
I think PaulK is doing a good job of describing the situation but I'll add whatever I can. From your post with the pictures I have the second modem, that says AT&T U-verse at the top. Do you still want to know what wires are in the back of the modem and where they go? I have to get up to find that out which I'll do in a few minutes. Right now I can say there are four wires and one is the phone wire that goes to the phone, that used to be in the wall jack. Apparently you didn't see the posts where I say my friend was able to get to the wall jack behind the bookcase, although I hadn't been able to reach it. She had to move the bookcase another few inches to reach it. She discovered there were two cords there after all, which I had originally expected to see but couldn't make them out, that went into that filter ("gizmo"), exiting in the one cord into the wall jack. Now there is only the power cord to the modem in the wall jack. Now that I understand all this I don't want it and am sorry I have it, but I appreciate all the attention people here have put into it. Faith, I already asked this a couple times above, but in case you missed it and when you get a chance, could you describe the wires that come out of your modem and where they go? If you can't trace them all the way back to their origin could you just describe generally where they go, like "behind the bookcase where the phone jack is" or "underneath the table where the computer is" and so forth?
Also, could you also describe any labeling on the outside of the modem? And the model number on the back? --Percy

Hi Faith,
Didn't see this message when I posted my last message. Yes, I'm still interested in knowing what your current connections are. In particular, does a phone wire from your new modem still go the the phone jack behind the bookcase? You said there are four wires coming out of the modem, so I'm going to guess:

The four wires on the back of the modem:
You said there are four wires coming out of the modem, so I'm going to guess: Power cord Yes, to electrical outlet, through a small box on the cord.
Phone cord going to a jack in the wall somewhere No, the phone cord now goes only from phone to modem.
Phone cord going to the phone Yes.
Ethernet cable to the computer (just the fact that it's an Ethernet cable is enough, since then it's obvious where it must go) Didn't notice "Ethernet" anywhere but yes there is a cord from the modem into the back of the computer. The fourth cord goes from the modem into the wall jack behind the bookcase (where before there had been both a DSL cord and a phone cord going into the jack through the "gizmo" filter). ABE: MODEM MODEL NO. 5031NVThen I can't make out all the small print but the number is repeated with .030 fxn after it. Edited by Faith, : No reason given.

Anybody know why my brand-new AA batteries only last a couple of weeks in my new wireless mouse? The last battery lasted one week. Those in the keyboard haven't died yet but I've replaced the one in the mouse four times since I got it in July. The more "improvements" in computering the less I like them.
abe: GUESS: Playing card games? They do take a lot of mouse clicks. But then so does reading all the threads at EvC take a lot of clicks. If I'm using up the battery with all those mouse clicks it's not worth having a wireless mouse. Edited by Faith, : No reason given. Edited by Faith, : No reason given.

I use a high end Logitech mouse. The rechargeable batteries in it last 2 or 3 months (maybe more - it is long enough I forget the last time I changed them.)
I almost always turn the mouse off at night since I believe the wireless communication runs all the time and it probably the biggest draw on charge. I don't know but would guess that addition use (mouse clicks, etc) don't make much difference.

Wow, I almost always use a logitech or ms wireless mouse and if I have to change batteries twice a year I'm surprised. Now I know at work the apple mice batteries would have to be charged/changed every week or so.

Thanks for your input. I'm going to try to refrain from the card games and see if it makes a difference.

Faith writes: The fourth cord goes from the modem into the wall jack behind the bookcase (where before there had been both a DSL cord and a phone cord going into the jack through the "gizmo" filter). A "phone cord" and a "DSL cord" are the same thing, though you probably want a good quality phone cord if you're using it for DSL. Phone cords vary a great deal in cord quality and thickness, and in the quality of the connectors on the end, and they can be different colors (though usually grey, tan or white), so you might think you had two or three different kinds of cord connecting to your "gizmo," but they were all phone cords. It's a phone cord going from the wall jack behind your bookcase into your modem. Poking around a bit, I think the back of your 5031nv looks pretty much like this:
Do I have that right? If so, then this is pretty much what I thought from way back in my Message 115:

It's a phone cord going from the wall jack behind your bookcase into your modem. I don't think so but perhaps someone else can enlighten. There were originally two cords going to the wall jack through the filter gizmo; now there is only one, and it's not the phone cord; the phone cord now goes from phone to modem. That switch is what the first tech told me to do and he called it the "phone" cord. The other cord which I thought was properly called the DSL cord, goes from modem to wall jack. The one I'm calling the phone cord is a thin flattish white cord. The one I'm calling the DSL cord is a thicker round white cord. Yes, that's how the back of my modem looks. Now with effort I can make out the word "Ethernet." The diagram looks right. And it shows that the phone cord and the DSL cord are two different cords, as I said. When you first posted the diagram I thought there was only one cord to the wall jack. My friend later found out there were two. Edited by Faith, : No reason given. Edited by Faith, : No reason given. To clarify the small confusion here the phone cord and the DSL cord are the same type - they use the same connectors and wiring. That's what Percy means. They go to different places and your DSL cord is probably higher quality, but they are basically the same type.

Phone cords are Category 3, or Cat 3, cables.
Ethernet cords are Category 5, or Cat 5, cables. DSL comes into your house over a phone cord. The modem transfers that signal to your computer through an Ethernet cord.

Seeing the label on the back of Faith's modem that says "Phone Lines 1 & 2" reminds me of an oft-forgotten fact: a regular phone cord can carry two phone lines. The cheapest phone cords have only two wires for one phone line, but a quality phone cord will have four wires for two phone lines. Call them Line 1 and Line 2.
If you plug your phone into a phone jack that has two lines, the phone will always be connected to Line 1. In order to connect your phone to Line 2 you'll need a specific type of splitter, one that looks like this:
Unfortunately, this splitter doesn't really do any splitting. It's just an adapter that sends both Line 1 and Line 2 to both output ports. It doesn't matter which port you plug your phone into, you'll always get Line 1. You'll instead need a splitter that looks like this:
There are, of course, many variations around this theme. --Percy
