On XP and before, you could search by filename and/or by contents, both of which could be, and most commonly would be, different from each other. Plus you could specify a range of dates for when that file was last created or changed (that feature in particular came to my rescue more times than I want to remember when my then-wife, who absolutely refused to ever learn anything about naming files and knowing where you put them, would complain loudly "Why can't I find my file on this stupid computer?" as if it were my fault).
On Win7, we lost all of that. All you can do now is give it one search string which it would use for searching both by filename and also by contents. And far too many times I would point it directly at a file with that specific filename and it could never find it. Oh, now it lets you attach metatagging to your files (Mac envy!), so now I have to go through all my text files and attach tags to them for every possible search I might make in the future? Nor can I run grep anymore, since my 64-bit machine rejected it. There is a new command-line with its own complex syntax, but my experiments with it revealed the same problems of not finding a file that's standing there right in front of it. I also encountered hints of a complex search syntax that you can use to refine searches, but it proved impossible to find any information on what that syntax is, even from Microsoft itself! They broke it, so they need to fix it! Which of course will never happen.

Grep is pretty much limited to finding files with text in them. Have you tried using the unix version of find? Are there really no versions of grep or find that works with windows? Have you tried the Cygwin version of those tools? There web site claims compatibility with all current 32 and 64 bit version of windows. I'm not using a 32 bit system, so I cannot verify that those tools will for for you. Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. Basically, I did look when I encountered this problem six years ago. I tried several of the solutions I found and none of them worked. At that point, I saw no other course of action available but to just give up.
The best solution I found was to install VMWare Player and use it to run WinXP so that I could perform searches on my text file archive, as well as to run 16-bit apps.

They broke it, so they need to fix it! Yes!!
Which of course will never happen. Yes.. And now it's time for my favourite line as a programmer: It's not how I'd program it

Plus you could specify a range of dates for when that file was last created or changed. I don't use this myself, but just now on my Windows 7 machine I clicked the Start button, entered a file name, and hit enter. This opened a folder of search results. I clicked on the Search box in the upper right and a drop down displayed several options: "Kind", "Date Modified", "Type" and "Size". The "Date Modified" option allows you to specify a range. It still has the annoying quality of behaving like a combination of "ls" and "grep", returning any file whose name or content produces a match. I use Cygwin on my Windows 7 machine when I'm doing any real work. Cygwin emulates a Linux environment and works pretty well, XEmacs is available, as are various versions of vi. The version of "find" they provide has the "-newer" and "-newerXY" options, but I've never used them myself, there's no "-older" version of these options to define a range, and "-newerXY" looks complicated. I have a simple shell script that lists the newest files in any directory. This is helpful because it tells me the files I was most recently working on, but even better you can feed it the output of "find" to list the newest files in a directory hierarchy that match a string. Here's an example that finds the 12 most recent files in my directory tree whose name contains the string "test":
% lfttl `find . -name "*test*"` -rw-rw-r--+ 1 Dir None 198 Jul 3 2015 ./styles/main/templates/arraytest_integer_keys.php~ -rw-rw-r--+ 1 Dir None 198 Jul 3 2015 ./styles/main/templates/arraytest_integer_keys.php -rw-rw-r--+ 1 Dir None 198 Jul 3 2015 ./styles/main/templates/arraytest_string_keys.php~ -rw-rw-r--+ 1 Dir None 538 Jul 3 2015 ./styles/main/templates/arraytest_string_keys.php -rwxrwx---+ 1 Dir None 261 Feb 23 17:36 ./test.php~ -rwxrwx---+ 1 Dir None 736 Feb 26 09:56 ./test.html -rwxrwx---+ 1 Dir None 132 Feb 27 10:48 ./Util/test2.php -rw-rw-r--+ 1 Dir None 57 Mar 10 09:58 ./transform_test.data -rwxrwx---+ 1 Dir None 103 Mar 18 15:23 ./Util/test.php~ -rw-rw-r--+ 1 Dir None 57 Apr 17 10:49 ./transform_test_20160311.data~ -rw-rw-r--+ 1 Dir None 66 Apr 17 10:49 ./transform_test_20160311.data -rwxrwx---+ 1 Dir None 558 Apr 26 09:48 ./Util/test.php --Percy Edited by Percy, : Typo.

That was over five years ago, but I'm sure that I had found those dropdown options. I'm also sure that I had found them to be useless as well, perhaps because they required special syntax that was undocumented. Or perhaps because search couldn't even find itself with both hands and a flashlight (refer back to how it couldn't find a file even when I pointed it right at it). Even the third-party apps I tried didn't work. So half a decade ago I just gave up on it.
I did have Cygwin installed on my Win7 machine, mainly to be able to experiment with C99. I haven't yet tried to see if it survived the migration to Win10 (or WinX? Or WindEx, which is supposed to cure everything?).

Bought a new touch screen laptop that had windoze 8.1 on it. Just as I got used to that it hijacked my machine and upgraded me to 10.
Now it isn't a touch screen laptop. Microsucks strikes again. Time to install linux.by our ability to understand Rebel☮American☆Zen☯Deist ... to learn ... to think ... to live ... to laugh ... to share. Join the effort to solve medical problems, AIDS/HIV, Cancer and more with Team EvC! (click)

I don't know if this is a Windows 10 problem or what it is. I made the mistake of reading through one of those long ads you get if you subscribe to a health or nutrition newsletter -- I subscribe to three and usually skip their email ads but fell for this one. Long bunch of pep talks about the terrible health situation that you know is leading up to some product they want to sell you, so I skip a lot of it trying to find where they actually tell you the solution to the problem. This one turned out to be a book they're selling. You say No Thanks and they say Don't Go Away Here's a Super Deal for You, Do You Really Want to Exit This Page, you click Yes and there's another page offering an even more super deal.
Well, the computer hung up on that last page so it's still on my screen after a whole day of trying to get rid of it. I can't use that browser, Microsoft Edge, so I'm writing this on Firefox. I've tried everything I can think of, Alt F4, Ctrl Alt Delete, Restarting, Shutting Down, nothing works. I've got a screenshot of the page in a program called Dropbox but I don't know how to post it, and it probably isn't important anyway. I suspect there's no solution, but any ideas are welcome. Edited by Faith, : No reason given.

There may be a solution. I cannot judge if this is too complicated for you.
If you type control-alt-delete, you should get a screen that allows you to bring up the task manager. From there you can find the process that is running your browser and you can shut it down. You may have to shut down multiple copies of Edge or Internet Explorer if you have multiple windows open. Other than that, you can shut down your computer and restart it. ABE: Just noticed that you said that the page returns when you restart. That means you have a more complex problem than I addressed. Sorry about that. Edited by NoNukes, : No reason given. Could you uninstall and reinstall Edge? Tiresome, I know ...

If none of the above suggestions help:
1. Start up your computer in Safe Mode. 2. Download Avira anti-virus or Kaspersky. 3. Run the anti-virus program. I'm not completely sure what the problem you're describing is, since there aren't any screenshots, but it's possible your computer has been infected with a virus of some sort.

I'd be afraid to try something like that. Not just tiresome but I'd probably do something wrong and be in worse trouble.
I did bring up the Task Manager as NN suggested but of course it's a huge long list of terms I don't understand. Thanks but I'm probably just stuck with Firefox for now.

Try this.
Start Edge. On upper right you will see three dots. Click on the three dots and you get a drop down panel with Settings at the bottom. One setting is "Clear Browsing Data"; select that. Check the first five boxes; Browsing History to Form Data. Click "Clear" Close and restart Edge.Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

I was afraid I wouldn't even get the upper panel because the page that is giving me so much trouble takes up the entire screen and there is no upper panel. However this time I got an earlier page and the upper panel was there. But clearing the browsing history, which I've done many times anyway, didn't get rid of it, and the next box that popped up from Edge itself just took me to that final panel anyway. Thanks but this is a headache that isn't going away.
