Re: you have a very small God
Isn't the Bible great Faith? There are so many contradictions included that you can pick and choose whatever you want, vengeful Jesus passages and forgiving Jesus passages. But as to you Thessalonians quote I would think it certainly would apply to many if not most so called "Biblical Christians".

Re: you have a very small God
But Jesus is not said to have quoted that part of Isaiah so it seems Jesus, at least as the author of Luke tells it, repudiates the vengeful critter Isaiah marketed.

I see. Pickers and choosers even have to make Jesus into a picker and chooser.
Talk to whoever wrote the story. That is who put the words into the character Jesus mouth. And yes, it is quite clear that the authors of the various New Testament works very selectively picked passages from the Old Testament and used them out of context to create the mythos called Christianity.

Re: you have a very small God
Yes, I agree. The many contradictions found in the Bible are funny but also understandable. While I do not believe there is any such thing as fallen man, I do acknowledge that the stories reflect the changing beliefs and creations of the people who wrote, edited, redacted, translated and complied the various stories.
AbE: Of course all of that is simply more evidence that the Bible is the product of humans and reflects the personal biases of all of the unknown and unheralded people involved in it's creation.

And of course the generations upon generations of people who believed the Bible just as written, as God's true revelation, all those great theologians like Augustine and the Church Fathers and so on down the centuries were just gullible mo*rons who hallucinated its consistency and supernatural coherence and were too stu*pid to recognize all those contradictions you find in it.
I doubt you can show where I called anyone gullible morons or stupid, rather they were quite bright and evolving and creating a product. Many worked actively to try to figure out ways to slip around those errors, contradictions, fallacies and fantasies which they too realized and thus the profession of Apologetics was created.

Faith writes:
The main characteristic of believers down the centuries is the fear of God, which would keep them from daring to treat God's word as a mere human creation, or to "market" anything of their own invention in its place.
Yes, there sadly are people who hold such beliefs, that a fear should drive the relationship with GOD.
Much of the Old Testament creates the image of the Evil God who must be feared. But such a small picayune God really should be pitied rather than feared and opposed rather than worshiped.
But that fortunately is not the only God Christianity markets and certainly not the only character described as Jesus. Except of course in some of the passages when Jesus is speaking about those who claim to be his followers like the goats in Matthew 25.
I have hopes though that those who market the God of Vengeance who should be feared will in the end be forgiven even if they are expected to attend a Christianity 101 level course.

Re: you have a very small God
Nice bumper stickers.
But sorry, but the small little picayune gods you market and worshiping the Bible as though it were not the work of man when in fact that there is no such thing as "The Bible" just diminishes the whole value of Jesus message.
You are of course free to hold such beliefs and even try to market them But I'm not a buyer.

ONE response and then I hope to leave you to your errors.
You wonder what sins your friend committed to deserve MS and cancer. Wasn't I clear that we INHERIT sins and punishments? She may personally have committed nothing to bring on her diseases.
And that is a great example of Christianity at it's most vile and pitiful state. If that were true then the Christian God most certainly is a monster that should be opposed by any thinking critter.

Re: Even pagan philosophers knew God's Law is slow, exact and inherited
Faith writes:
The windmills of God grind exceeding fine.
ABE: By the way, I looked it up and found its source is pagan philosophy, which is acknowledging both that God's judgment may take a long time in coming -- The saying is actually: "The mills of God grind slowly but they grind exceeding fine" -- but exact (implying fulfillment to jot and tittle). So it's not a Christian concept, it's another of those recognitions of the Law of God by pagans, like karma that I already mentioned. God's Law is recognized by many peoples as both slow and precise. "Ancestral" sins are also mentioned in the article, implying that pagan philosophers also knew that we inherit sin.
No one questions that over time people created Gods that should be feared and that is also what is reflected in much of the Old Testament. A great example is the God character created by the author or authors of Exodus. The God character found in Exodus is a real prick certainly unworthy of worship and like any deranged despot rightly feared.
Hopefully though people today are more moral than that character.

OK, Phat, then how do YOU explain the two NEW TESTAMENT scriptures I posted about Jesus Second Coming in vengeance against His enemies?
It's really simple. That is what the authors of those passages believed and tried to market. Those are very common attributes of the different Gods people of various ages created.

Are you suggesting that the Bible was only written for the people of that era back then?
And what possible support could there be for that position?
And what possible reason can you give for anyone taking your latest Epiphany source seriously when history shows that every past similar prophet including Jesus has been shown to be wrong?
Wouldn't a better "Epiphany" be seriously doing what we are commanded to do; to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick, comfort the sorrowful, protect the weak, do for others?

You are quite mistaken in your understanding. Jesus was never "wrong." And to claim such shows your spiritual ignorance. You need to read the Bible without your intellectual blinders on.
Maybe I don't use spiritual vision and so just see the words that were written. LOL

yes, I think so! Logic reason and reality could never happen were Jesus only human.
It is more proper to say that Jesus is a work in progress. He will return. And He is and was never wrong. As Christians, we are not called to correct Jesus as Jews did with God.
Why not?
