Re: Decisions Decisions
Everything else is part of tomorrow's discussion.
How'd it go?
the commute was really the only down side to the job
Was that 60 miles total and not each way? I drive half that total, and doubling it doesn't seem that bad. Quadrupling it, though, and I think I might be out... depending on the pay, and whether or not I could field test potential new equipment, with cutting edge technology, while my employer pays for my next trip to the lake to find dragonflies.
Or maybe you just need a friend whose company really wants to buy a bunch of pictures of dragonflies for whatever... Dude, if I find you that friend do I get to be your agent?

Re: Decisions Decisions
I ended up postponing until tomorrow.
How'd it go?
I can only take a limited appointment that limits me to working less than 90 days per year,
Just curious, how's that measured? If you work 1 hour one day, is that you working "a day"? Or is it, like, 720 hours of work (8 hrs/day)?
I am flattered they asked me, but realistically I have a bunch of research projects I'm working on and jt would be silly to take a full time job.
Losing your pension would be even sillier...

Re: Decisions Decisions
I am going to accept the job
Awesome! Congratulations.
Yep, it is 720 hours, so basically I can work 720 hours between now and the end of the year and the another 720 in 2017,
Okay, that ain't so bad. You could work three days a week for five hours each day and work all year.
When I got home my wife asked me if I would really like to go back to work full time and the truth is, I would.
When my dad retired he spent two weeks on the couch watching TV and then said fuck this and went out and found a job.
It was an incredibly rewarding job and every day brought new challenges and every day I learned new things.
...
When I started there the position of Insect Imaging Specialist did not exist. Now there are 2 full time people and 2 support staff and there are almost more imaging projects than they can handle. Lots of the images are used in computer based insect screening aids that are distributed to scientists and technicians at federal and state agencies to help them identify native species, but more importantly exotic invasive species.
Yeah, that sounds really cool. Good for you!

Re: Decisions Decisions
I just wish I was 30 years younger (well, don't we all?)
No because I'd be 5

Re: New realms to explore
The 1st image is a dorsal view of a dragonfly head, so not super small. Shot with just a 5X objective using the technique called focus stacking, where a series of images are shot as the camera is incrementally moved a small distance closer to the subject. The focused parts of the image are then combined to create a composite with greatly expanded depth of focus.
OOOoooohhhhhh, I see!
As you can see in this next image the depth of focus is extremely shallow and it shrinks as magnification is increased. This is a single layer out of a stack of 150 images.
...
The composite gives us a much better view of what this moth look eye and head look like.
Thanks a lot for showing us that! That's really cool, I had no idea.
TIL Thanks again.

Imagine all that visual information being processed during high speed flight maneuvers.
What do you know about their brains?
I question it being "all that" information If each lense is just detecting a 1 or a 0, then it wouldn't be that much info in total. Prolly less than just two eyes that can distinguish over a range of hundreds of nanometers of wavelengths each.
But I'm guessing.

What is the difference between the upper larger eye spots and the smaller lower eye spots?
Their diameter
