You need to be in business. Start a corporation, your old employer hires/contracts with the corporation and sends it a 1099 form of what your company was paid once a year.
I am not making a recommendation for what Tan ought to do with respect to his former employer, but generally speaking, a single professional is probably better off forming an LLC rather than a corporation. The tax and liability treatment is very similar, but the management overhead is much, much less.
