I'm enjoying a course on ancient history on my local Christian radio station so thought I'd post information about it. It may be too "Christian" for some but it's predominantly on the historical facts, with some Christian worldview framing.

It started some weeks ago with the Creation, Flood etc., and traces the spread of cultures from the "Table of Nations" in Genesis 10 and 11. It's packed with historical information I expect would be new to most people.

Today was on the civilization of the Indus Valley, mostly focusing on Hinduism and related religions. I missed yesterday's but day before was about how the ancient civilizations were connected by famous roads and how they contributed to the spread of culture: "The Silk Road" was fascinating. Monday's will be about Alexander the Great.

The course is given by pastor and prolific author, George Grant, purchasable on his website here or you could hear it on the radio as I am doing, here -- it's aired three times a day. See left hand column. Times are Pacific Daylight.

George Grant
I looked up the author,George Grant and see that he has credentials in the Biblical Christian community. His course is rather expensive, but if you are listening to it free then im not worried.
Grant holds to the standards of the Westminster Confession of Faith and looks to Francis Schaeffer (1912–1984), founder of L'Abri in Switzerland, and Thomas Chalmers (1780–1847), founder of New College Edinburgh, as his chief spiritual and intellectual influences. He has also been profoundly influenced by Martin Bucer (1491–1551), Jan Amos Comenius (1592–1670), Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834–1892), Abraham Kuyper (1837–1920), G.K. Chesterton (1874–1936), J.R.R. Tolkien (1892–1973), and C.S. Lewis (1898–1963). In recent years, he has closely associated himself and his writing with the Ligonier Ministries of R.C. Sproul (b. 1939).[6]
I like the fact that he hangs with RC Sproul...one of my favorite speakers along with Dr.Ravi Zacharias.

What is his take on The Flood anyway?

Re: George Grant
I missed the early part of Grant's course, but at least on the timing, judging from how he's using the scripture on the Table of Nations and Noah's sons as the progenitors of all the historical civilizations he's teaching about, my guess is he's pretty standard conservative on the Flood. I'm pretty sure R. C. Sproul is too. I wish I could afford to buy his course; the guy has read a ton of ancient history. Actually I wish it was in book form.

Speaking of RC Sproul, you may be interested in this article he wrote;

Have you considered getting one of those 'read aloud' things for your browser? I'm sure that the web site Phat refers to is not the first thing you've wanted to read, but found it hard on the eyes.

If you are interested, I'd be happy to try out a few of the free ones and make a recommendation for you.

A gross misuse of the term "History"
I find the whole concept of a course on "Antiquity" based on a Biblical Christian worldview very disturbing. Unfortunately, most history has been taught and marketed from a Christian worldview without any attempt to present the other possible worldview positions or the great debt the Western Christian cultures owe to the Muslim world in maintaining learning and culture and education and tolerance of other religions.

Today's program on Alexander the Great
I listened, found it as usual very interesting. There was one mention of the Bible, the fact that two books of the Old Testament reference the king of Persia during the greatness of the Persian empire, otherwise it was all standard history but at a level of detail it takes a well-read historian an hour to present. All about Alexander's life, character and conquests. At the very end Grant gives us a Christian exhortation on the dangers of great pride in achievement. Otherwise it's all historical facts found in such sources as Plutarch's "Lives." This program will be repeated twice again today and tomorrow will be about the period following Alexander's conquests.
