Transposable genes
Can genes transpose into and out of the junk DNA?

Re: Transposable genes
Very interesting. Thank you.
McClintock discovered transposable genes because of their affects on the appearance of corn. If they are non-coding, they should not have that effect. So I think that indicates that they can move out of the junk DNA. Comments?

Re: Generally speaking
It depends on what science, what are your goals, how tiring is your work, etc.
I suggest you open a [forum=-14] thread with a bit more info on what you are your aims.

Re: Generally speaking
My degree is in mathematics and my current university position is in computer science. My experience is that students who attempt to complete a degree while holding down a full time job have a difficult time of it. And it is surely harder in physics, chemistry, biology than it is in mathematics or computer science.

Re: Generally speaking
I would not think lab fees would be a big problem. Lab time and study time are the biggest problem. Somebody with a full time job has not only that job, but other commitments related to the job that eat into the time. And science classes typically require a larger study time commitment than to classes in other disciplines.

Re: chatroom problem
I was in chat for part of your conversation with Trixie. What you report in Message 40 is a thoroughly dishonest account of what I saw.

Re: Message system
Can suspended members send and receive messages?
I'm not sure, but I think not.
Originally, they could. But then a suspended spammer sent spam messages to every member.

Re: Ratings Still Suck
Creationist participants here are labouring under enough discouragement already without their having to be rated a humiliating 1.3 or something.
Nobody is taking the ratings seriously, as best I can tell. But the cheers/jeers are sometimes entertaining.

Re: Member Ratings
What I suggest is only being able to rate a post that you actively participate in. In other words, unless you respond to a post or a post is a response to you, you can not rate it.
I don't agree with that.
I rarely rate. But if I see a post that is total bullshit and way off topic, I should not have to reply to it in order to be able to jeer.

Re: Why is My Smartphone's Time Off?
Our cell phones should be getting their time from the cell tower,
It probably is
which in turn should be getting its time from the GPS system.
That's the part you should not count on.
I just checked my smart phone, and it seems to be spot with time. But it hasn't always been. It sometimes looks as if a human sets a clock on a whim for the regional center of the carrier, and that is sent out to all cell phones.

Re: Why is My Smartphone's Time Off?
They don't have to use the same clock for setting human time as they use for their electronics.
Internally, the cell phone probably uses UTC, with the tower sending an offset from UTC.

Re: Why is My Smartphone's Time Off?
UTC is human-usable time.
As far as I know, there is a proposal to stop applying leap seconds to UTC. So GMT will then differ from UTC, because GMT will still get leap seconds.

Re: Missing message
I seem to recall having a similar problem, though that was a while ago.
My best guess, at that time, was that a database entry was out of date. And presumably that entry is needed for the reply. After some additional posts to the thread, it usually corrects itself.
