Former President Bush disagrees with Trump
quote:
One of the things I spent a lot time doing was trying to convince a person like Vladimir Putin, for example, to accept the notion of an independent press, Former President George W. Bush says.
source
He goes on to say:
quote:
I consider the media to be indispensable to democracy. That we need the media to hold people like me to account, Bush told Matt Lauer, anchor of NBC’s Today show. I mean, power can be very addictive and it can be corrosive and it's important for the media to call to account people who abuse their power, whether it be here or elsewhere.
One of the things I spent a lot time doing was trying to convince a person like Vladimir Putin, for example, to accept the notion of an independent press, Bush said. And it's kind of hard to, you know, tell others to have an independent, free press when we're not willing to have one ourselves.
Edited by jar, : add second part of the quote to place the headline quote in context.

Former President Bush disagrees with Trump about immigration too.
quote:
"I am for an immigration policy that is welcoming and that upholds the law."
And Bush goes on to say:
quote:
"One of our great strengths is for people to be able to worship the way they want to or not worship at all,"
source
After the attacks of 9-11 Bush had made a point of supporting Muslims and praising Islam's teachings as peaceful.

US provides Intel Briefings to this man
The US is currently welcoming this man to high level intel briefings at the highest Governmental level.
Harjit Singh Sajjan is a Liberal Party Sikh and the Canadian Minister of National Defense and has direct personal access to Lieutenant General James L. Terry Commanding General, U.S. Army V Corps.
He, like Sadiq Khan the Muslim Mayor of London and Labour Party member are examples of the rising influence of the Indian migration after the 1947 breakup of India. Sadiq Khan was elected with the largest personal mandate in the history of UK elections and the third highest in Europe.

U.S. appeals court will not put Trump travel ban case on hold
The courts once again have rejected the Trump Administrations request to put the Trump Travel Ban case on hold. The issue this time again hinges on what Trump has said publicly; both that a new policy will be issued as a replacement and also that it would appeal. Since the very words of the President are contradictory the court found it could not reasonable put the case on hold.
source
Once again the problem is that no one can believe or trust what Trump and the Trump Administration say.

Re: Health Care is Actually Very Simple
Thirty-two of the current Thirty-three Developed Nations have Universal Health Care systems.
Here is a list:
source
Some of these nations figured out how to do it before WWI.
It really is simple. Pick one and do what they did.

Re: Health Care is Actually Very Simple
Added the source but I made the jpg.
And what process should congress use to pick the plan?
The House has 435 members. There are thirty two countries on the list. Divide the House Membership up by drawing names out of a hat into thirty two teams of 13-14 members each. Assign one nation to each team and send them and their wives off on a vacation to their assigned nation.
When they return they must each prepare a Bill supporting choosing the plan from their assigned nation.
All thirty-two bills get sent to the Senate where the Senate passes one bill that then becomes the US Universal Healthcare Plan for a term of not less than ten years. At the end of every ten year period the Congress can vote to repeat the process or renew the US Healthcare Plan.

Re: Trump Willing to Compromise on Immigration
Maybe he read the writing on the wall?
AbE:
But why not a path to citizenship?
If Trump spent the next four years turning illegal immigrants into US Citizens because of Donald Trump is there any way he could be defeated?
Why not turn those three million fraudulent votes from illegal immigrants into three million legal votes for the man who led them to FREEDOM, FREEDOM Shout it from the rooftops, PRAISE god and TRUMP that FREEDOM RINGS.

NN writes:
What if in addition to the wing nut stuff Trump does, he manages to pull of some version of comprehensive immigration reform, while putting in place a half-way decent health care replacement (meaning something other than y'all poor folks hurry up and die)? Goodbye democrats forever?
As Newt Gingrich said back when he actually was a power to be reckoned with, the Party that puts a Universal Health Care system in place will hold the power for at least two generations.

Re: Trump Willing to Compromise on Immigration
If he is smart then the cost will be from programs where the damage can be hidden for decades. The obvious place he will look is the environment. He can rape the lands and as long as he avoids the tourist spots not create too great a backlash. He can rape the streams and until it shows up in a major cities water supply there will be no backlash and when that does happen he can blame the City Manager. And raping the environment will easily generate the cash needed to do both.

Re: Trump only deporting criminals and "bad hombres"? It's a lie.
It gets worse as I pointed out in Message 732:
Last Wednesday she was one of the speakers at a rally opposing the current deportation frenzy.
quote:
Today my father and brother await deportation, she said, while I continue to fight this battle as a dreamer to help contribute to this country which I feel that is very much my country.
source
The story continues:
quote:
After leaving the news conference with her friend, two law enforcement cars pulled her over. ICE agents reportedly opened the car door, telling Vargas, you know who we are and you know why we’re here, her friend, Jordan Sanders, told Univision. Then, they handcuffed her and took her into custody.
Her father and brother were already arrested and they to had not committed any criminal acts.
The mother is Arizona when was arrested and deported when she reported in to immigration for her annual check as she had been told to do also had not committed any criminal offense.
The person who was taken into custody in the court house after her hearing for an order of protection against her boyfriend after ICE got an anonymous tip where an illegal alien might be found was also hardly a threat to the US.
It seems the Trump immigration policy is "If you're Brown you're going down".

Follow the money ...
It seems we may have heard that advice regarding another Republican President or two.
Trump claimed he never did business with Russia yet without financial disclosure there is no way to tell how indebted President Trump might be due to Russian financing.
As a first baby step Trump should at least do what he pledged to do and release his tax returns.
Can we afford a President who may owe money to Russian Bank or worse, other Russian financing?
When the US and European banks refused to lend Trump any more money based on all of his business failures and bankruptcies, where did he go to find funding?

Trump makes America safer by sticking our heads in the sand.
According to a report in the Washington Post and many, many other sources yesterday Donal Trump pulled what may well be the dumbest trick yet in his parade of really dumb tricks.
quote:
The Trump administration is seeking to slash the budget of one of the government’s premier climate science agencies by 17 percent, delivering steep cuts to research funding and satellite programs, according to a four-page budget memo obtained by The Washington Post.
The proposed cuts to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration would also eliminate funding for a variety of smaller programs, including external research, coastal management, estuary reserves and coastal resilience, which seeks to bolster the ability of coastal areas to withstand major storms and rising seas.
source
Having spent a couple decades running computer systems and writing programs for data analysis for some Marine Biologists this is an area where I have a small amount of experience. What we don't know about our oceans, our beaches, the fisheries and marshes has always been hampered by under-funding. There simply has not been enough money to do a good job of monitoring.
The advent of NOAA satellite system and Sea Grant funding helped some; not much but some.
And then ...
quote:
The OMB outline for the Commerce Department for fiscal 2018 proposed sharp reductions in specific areas within NOAA such as spending on education, grants and research. NOAA’s Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research would lose $126 million, or 26 percent, of the funds it has under the current budget. Its satellite data division would lose $513 million, or 22 percent, of its current funding under the proposal.
il Donald says "Let's cut the funding for satellite data by almost a quarter".
quote:
Many scientists warned that the deep cuts at NOAA could hurt safety as well as academic programs.
Conrad Lautenbacher, a retired vice admiral who was the NOAA administrator under President George W. Bush, said, I think the cuts are ill timed given the needs of society, economy and the military. He added, It will be very hard for NOAA to manage and maintain the kind of services the country requires with the proposed cuts.
Jane Lubchenco, NOAA administrator under President Barack Obama, said that 90 percent of the information for weather forecasts comes from satellites. Cutting NOAA’s satellite budget will compromise NOAA’s mission of keeping Americans safe from extreme weather and providing forecasts that allow businesses and citizens to make smart plans, she said.
Rick Spinrad, a former chief scientist for NOAA, said: NOAA’s research and operations, including satellite data management, support critical safety needs. A reduced investment now would virtually guarantee jeopardizing the safety of the American public.
He said that weather warnings for tornadoes and hurricanes could be compromised and that navigational capacity used to help guide commercial ships and other mariners would suffer, leaving them without the improved forecasts they need to safely maneuver coastal waters. It could become harder to warn of tsunamis and forecast weather that will cause power outages.
David Titley, a professor of meteorology at Pennsylvania State University who served as NOAA’s chief operating officer in the Obama administration, said that oddly the White House budget office, despite the president’s commitment to building infrastructure, would cut NOAA’s budget for ships and satellites. These cuts will impact good private-sector jobs in the U.S., Titley said. The loss of capability will make America weaker both in space and on the sea a strange place to be for an administration that campaigned to ‘make America great again.’
I feel so much safer now.
AbE: Just some more of the reasons this policy is another example of the small mind and ignorance that dominates US Government and the Trump Administration in particular.
Trump has said that his reason to make such cuts is to prioritize defense spend to keep America safe.
Well, Donald, if keeping America safe really is your goal maybe it would be wise to learn just a little about the threats American faces.
From data from the very Agency you want to emasculate:
quote:
In 2016, there were 15 weather and climate disaster events with losses exceeding $1 billion each across the United States.
quote:
The U.S. has sustained 203 weather and climate disasters since 1980 where overall damages/costs reached or exceeded $1 billion (including CPI adjustment to 2016). The total cost of these 203 events exceeds $1.1 trillion.
Donald, these are real threats, not imaginary terrorists slipping across the border.
And Donald, the only defense against such threats is knowledge. Guns and bombs and nuclear warheads won't cut it.
And Donald, stopping watching out for such threats will not help avoid them.
And Donald, are you really this stupid?
