Just updating the Sweden subthread.
Donald Trump altered his Sweden claim, but in a way which was still wrong, and then refused to back away from the altered claim. Here's his full original claim:
"Here’s the bottom line. We’ve got to keep our country safe. You look at what’s happening. We’ve got to keep our country safe. You look at what’s happening in Germany, you look at what’s happening last night in Sweden. Sweden, who would believe this. Sweden. They took in large numbers [of refugees from Muslim-majority countries]. They’re having problems like they never thought possible. You look at what’s happening in Brussels. You look at what’s happening all over the world. Take a look at Nice. Take a look at Paris. We’ve allowed thousands and thousands of people into our country and there was no way to vet those people. There was no documentation. There was no nothing. So we’re going to keep our country safe." Nothing happened "last night in Sweden." When challenged on it he changed his story to crime is out of control in Sweden, which is also untrue, since it's approximately unchanged year over year. This is why Trump is a liar and the mainstream media is not. No one's perfect, one one's demanding perfection, but when Trump gets something wrong he just keeps repeating the mistake over and over. When the media gets something wrong, which they do at a far lower rate than Trump even though they outnumber him, they correct it. They don't keep repeating untrue things. Trump is a president like no other. He evidently spends his evenings watching the news and tweeting out reactions that should be vetted by his staff and the relevant departments but are not. Ill-considered ignorant tweets just fly off Trump's fingers and out into cyberspace without a moment's thought or consideration, and certainly no research. --Percy

marc9000 writes: I think he's seen past presidents show fear and intimidation of the news media, and he feels it's long past time for someone to stand up to it. The much more significant source of false facts and lies is not the mainstream media but Trump himself.
I'm done for now referencing news media lies before 2015. That's good, because this thread is about the Trump Presidency, which began in 2017.
The headlines are accurate in the way headlines from all points of the political spectrum are. Sorry, they are not. Sorry, but they are.
And now we've found a third person who finds no fact so firm that it can't be explained away in his own mind if it conflicts with his opinion. You're looking in a mirror.
"Any examples"? So you've disregarded most of my message 460? Disregarded the one about the MLK statue being removed? Disregarded? I don't think so. I responded to what was relevant in both those messages.
So you can tell me the headlines aren't lies, but they are dishonest. The headlines are written the way headlines across all points of the political spectrum are written, the way headlines have always been written. I agree headlines are too sensationalized everywhere, but that's what headlines do. Many people do understand this fact about headlines, and do read past the headline.
It's the news media, more than anything else, that has worked so many people into a frenzy that they're still staging these stupid protests, like they had more of on yesterday's holiday. You have something against these protests? I agree that the news reported by the mainstream media has people very upset, but that's because what Trump is doing is very upsetting.
Now, take off with those goalposts again! Tell me I haven't shown you a single example of media bias and dishonesty. We'll see who has the most staying power. I'd say you have a legitimate complaint about headlines - I have the same complaint. But you also conceded that the articles in your examples contained accurate information. --Percy

This happened earlier in the week, but it should be mentioned. On Wednesday Trump rescinded the Obama rules giving transgender students the right to choose their own bathrooms. It left in place protections against bullying and so forth.
I don't understand objections to the rule. Now, depending upon the state, students who look like men will be using the women's bathroom, and students who look like women will be using the men's bathroom. How does that make any sense? I know how I'd react to a woman in the men's bathroom - I'd feel very uncomfortable. Isn't that how most people feel? I'd probably leave and look for another bathroom. Here's the New York Times article: Trump Rescinds Rules on Bathrooms for Transgender Students --Percy

RAZD writes: Trump supporters blatantly waving Russian flags at CPAC. Pathetic. It's a good joke on them, but probably not many people know those red, blue and white stripes are the Russian flag. That joke would probably work at any political gathering regardless of party. --Percy

Though the Trump administration claimed that the travel ban did not target Muslims, the courts ruled that it did. Now the data are in and it has been revealed that the courts were correct. In the week before the travel ban was overturned only 15% of refugees were Muslim, compared to 45% normally.

An investigation in Ohio has revealed that of over 5 million votes cast less than .002% were cast by non-citizens. News article: Ohio Secretary of State concludes investigation; here’s how many non-citizen votes were cast in 2016
If similar levels of non-citizen voting occurred in the rest of the country then that would be only a couple thousand votes nationwide. Trump is going to have to cast a much wider net if he's going to find those 3 million fraudulent votes. Prediction for tomorrow night's State of the Union speech: Trump's speech will be over the top, and at some points he will be booed. Before the speech's conclusion some will have walked out. I can't recall watching a State of the Union address in a very long time, probably since Carter or Reagan, but I plan to watch this one. My bet? Highest ratings in television history for a SOTU address. Current record holder: Clinton in 1993. This should make Trump very happy. He'll of course claim the biggest crowd in history no matter what, but this time he'll probably be right. --Percy

In tonight's State of the Union message, president Trump is expected to lay out more details about how he plans to repeal and replace Obamacare, about which he said yesterday in a meeting with governors, "Now, I have to tell you, it's an unbelievably complex subject. Nobody knew health care could be so complicated."
But health care is not complicated. It's actually very simple. What makes Trump's task complicated is the mutually exclusive goals he's set himself:
This is, of course, impossible. Trump has been using the euphemistic "complicated," but actually it's impossible. It will be interesting to watch Trump work out his differences with those in the Republican party who want simply to eliminate Obamacare while addressing his contradictory goals. --Percy

I had to check the calendar and make sure it isn't April 1st, but the Washington Post is reporting that President Trump is willing to compromise on immigration:
quote: Article: Trump says he is open to immigration compromise that provides a pathway to legal status The New York Times is reporting the same thing: Trump Signals Drastic Shift on Immigrants Fox News reported this in a more tempered fashion: Trump voices support for immigration bill ahead of speech to Congress:
quote: Chris Wallace called him a "kinder, gentler Donald Trump." Hard to believe. It's hard to know how seriously to take this, we'll have to see what develops. --Percy

It was today reported in the Washington Post that young "dreamer" Daniela Vargas was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for overstaying her DACA registration after letting her prior one expire. DACA stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, aka the Dreamer program. Vargas arrived in this country when she was 7.

I guess as part of keeping a complete record we're obligated to record that Trump just today accused Obama of wiretapping his phones:

petrophysics1 writes: Trump is great he is doing everything he said he would. I don't recall him saying he would run a chaotic and inept first 40 days of his presidency characterized by paranoid accusations, mean-minded actions and a nationalistic frenzy. He's to be given credit for trying to do what he said he would do, but he's doing it very poorly and incompetently whether it's immigration or trade or national defense or even just staffing his administration.
If you don't like him being president, change the constitution, you only need 3/4 of the states to agree with you. You might be confusing impeachment with an amendment.
What a great thing.......eight years of watching liberal heads EXPLODE. You take joy in other people's unhappiness? Way to go, guy. I'm not a liberal, I just recognize crazy when I see it. --Percy

The new travel ban is much like the old. The details can be read here, Trump Issues a Travel Ban Altered to Stand Up in Court, notably that total refugees for 2017 is reduced from 110,000 to 50,000, but the important question is whether the new ban will stand up to legal scrutiny. Both the Washington Post and the New York Times ran editorials arguing that the new ban is still illegal and unconstitutional:
These editorials argue that if the travel ban is overturned it will be because its actual purpose is religious discrimination against Muslims. --Percy

The GOP healthcare bill now working its way through the House would reduce taxes on the rich by billions of dollars per year. Repealed would be the 3.8% tax on capital gains, and the 0.9% Medicare surcharge. These taxes apply only to those making more than $200,000/year, or $250,000/year filing jointly. Income from these taxes were used to help fund the Affordable Care Act.

Yesterday FBI chief James Comey testified before the House Intelligence Committee that the FBI was investigating Trump staff ties to Russia, and that there was no evidence supporting Trump's wiretapping claims. Article: F.B.I. Is Investigating Trump’s Russia Ties, Comey Confirms
It has been widely expected that Trump wouldn't be able to get through four years without committing an impeachable offense, but now it seems possible that he committed an impeachable offense even before being inaugurated. Of course he won't actually be impeached, not with the Republicans in control of the House. --Percy

Trump's approval rating has sunk to the lowest since inauguration, 44% in the latest Rasmussen tracking poll, while the latest Gallup poll has Trump at 41% approval. These are the worst numbers in history for a new president.
How is one to sum up these past 70 or so days? Most recently, of course, there's the stunning legislative defeat of the Obamacare replacement bill, which didn't even make it to the House floor for a vote, but then there were all the stumbling and self-inflicted wounds as Trump continually distracted from his plans and programs with a raft of unsubstantiated claims and accusations, from inauguration crowd sizes to wiretapping. Trump is temperamentally unsuited for government. Used to getting his own way, he's unfamiliar with the give and take of political negotiations, and he's surrounded himself with too many political neophytes. But Trump has determination and staying power, and future efforts in areas like infrastructure and tax cuts are unlikely to divide the Republicans in the way that healthcare did. It would be a mistake to treat his healthcare setback as any kind of permanent victory for Democrats. A last note on healthcare: after the failure of the Republican bill Trump claimed that Obamacare would eventually implode, leaving the Democrats begging for help. That *could* happen. Trump issued an executive order that federal departments enforce Obamacare as minimally as legally possible, so it's already wounded in that sense, and this caused sign ups this year to decline. Premiums have risen for this year, and while not substantial enough to have any significant impact, people can't afford increases year after year. If Obamacare premiums don't stabilize next year then there could be a substantial decrease in sign ups, enough to significantly break the balance between revenue and payouts. Plus the penalty is simply unfair. People who can't afford $2500 for healthcare are being taxed an additional $1200 and receiving nothing in return. That's not right and should be fixed. --Percy
