This is an extract of the BBC's translation of some of Macron's words last night in the debate against the far right Le Pen (I can probably find the original French if anyone wants the exact words):
In a soft voice, Macron brutally lays into Le Pen.
"The country is not important to you, you don't have a project.
"Your campaign of lies and falsification feeds off fear. It is fear that nourishes you.
"I don't want this for France - it is worth more than that.
"I understand the anger of our fellow citizens. I want to bring a deep response.
"I want a France that is reconciled with itself and one that is truly transformed."
I wish the Remain side had had someone this eloquent and charismatic during the Brexit debate.
(That said, the French are generally well educated, well read and thoughtful, so a majority will understand and appreciate where he's coming from).
Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?
