Re: Other geniuses
Oh for pete's sake. There has never been any sense of socially sanctioned discrimination like what is shown in the movie. No separate bathrooms and no feeling there should be, no separate coffee pots, no separate sitting areas, no back of the bus, no separate fountains.
Never? I will take this to mean that you believe that the era when there were separate bathrooms, water coolers, lunch counters and back of the bus stuff ended before the time depicted in the movie, and not that such times never happened.
You are nowhere close to the truth.
It turns out that stuff like that did in fact exist in the early 1960s. The private high school I attended in Georgia, was integrated for the first time in the late 1960s. I could tell you some really eye opening stories about what happen to the first black students to attend. The freedom riders bus program was in 1961. The 16th Street Church bombing was in 1963. Federal troops were required to support the entry of black students into the University of Alabama in 1963.
All of that stuff overlaps the events depicted in the movie.
Perhaps you lived in a place of sunshine and light during that period. That does not justify your maintaining that the stuff depicted in the movie was wrong without at least checking first. I'll never understand that attitude. But at least its harmless enough in this instance.

Ja, Der Steppenwolf habe ich vielmals gelesen. Meistens fhle mich als ob ich auch ein Steppenwolf bin. Doch habe ich noch nicht zu lachen gelernt.
Das Glasperlenspiel can be rather abstract. Did you read the lives at the end? Especially the Indian Life? There is an old tale about a sailor who's swept from his boat and rescued by a mermaid, etc, and goes on to many adventures until he finally drowns from the initial event. It was redone in Clay Pigeon (1971) where a Vietnam soldier throws himself upon a grenade, lives an entire life, and then the grenade explodes.

Re: Math and Language
After my divorce, I had a friend in the dance community who was wary of trying to learn a second dance. With the first dance, you have also learned the basic skills for learning a dance, so the third dance will be easy.
Having learned a second language (USA experience without considering any pre-puberty acquisition), the third and fourth and fifth languages are so much easier. Part of learning that second language involves learning how to learn another language, which itself can be considered a skill.
Thanks for this info, I am natively bilingual (i.e. both are my mother tongue) would that mean I wouldn't have acquired the skill of "learning another language" as fully as somebody who learns as an adult (just looking for your expertise here).
I'm planning to start in the summer, when a few other projects will be finished (just have to pick a language have it narrowed to three).

I can read about two thirds of the sentence in German. I also gravitated toward languages but never really learned any well enough to use it. I can almost carry on a conversation in Spanish, but "almost" is probably an exaggeration. I had three college semesters of German, one of French and three weeks of Russian. Enough to get a little flavor of them all.
No, I didn't read the back of Magister Ludi either. Steppenwolf was a cult book for my generation.

As Steppenwolf was for my generation (I'm 65), though I identified strongly with it and for decades the original German edition has been my companion for long waits.
Give "The Indian Life" a read. I really wish I could be reminded of the similar story of the drowning sailor, which is the true classic story.

Yes, I have read Der Steppenwolf many times. Mostly I feel as if I am a Steppenwolf. Though I have not yet learned to laugh.
I just returned from a three-week vacation in Austria and Germany. However, since I was travelling with my friend who doesn't know any German, I didn't get much opportunity to use German.

Funny how "Steppenwolf" seemed to speak to so many --my generation is ten years before yours. We all thought we were Steppenwolves.
I can't find "The Indian Life" online.
