The Birds of Mount Pilatus
We visited the top of Mt. Pilatus, a short distance south of Luzern, Switzerland.
There were these birds flocking about; I wasn't able to catch one in a photo. They were about the size and shape of crows, but they had bright yellow beaks. They would circle about, land on the railings, seemed to try to forage on tourist food. And their cry was very similar to that of a hawk or an eagle.
Anybody have an idea what they could have been?

It appears they are Alpine Choughs.

Re: The Birds of Mount Pilatus
That certainly looks right. They did look very much like crows, but the beaks and call were very different. The calls that I found for it were very different from the normal crow caws, but still not quite like the eagle call I heard. Though I only heard that call once, so maybe there was an eagle or other raptor circling above out of sight.
Thanks!

Re: What Kind of Stone Is This?
It sounds about right, but doesn't look quite right in that link. Two things really struck me:
  1. The stone in both Cdiz, Spain, and Salzburg, Austria, appear virtually identical to my eye, as far as my memory can serve me.
  2. That stone was used as a primary building material in both locales at some point in the past. In both locales, it is ubiquitous. That means it had to have been plentiful and available.
I'll try following that lead, but the question might still be open.

Mysterious forum stats
I've been taking note of the stats recently for some reason, and noticing that the number of visitors has been fluctuating widely. It will run from about 100 to 120 for a long period and then jump to about 350 to 400 and sometimes more for another long period. I can't imagine what could cause such a wide difference. Any thoughts?
On the same subject of stats it's interesting that we aren't yet to the middle of the year and already have 15,724 posts, as compared to last year's total for the whole year of 21,208. We have two new YECs which to my mind is a great gain, but we also have Davidjay who has been getting a lot of the wrong kind of attention. He's a prolific poster and he gets a lot of replies despite a lot of buzz about how he should be ignored as a troll. He's put up some good posts but also a lot of posts I would strongly object to except that I don't want to get into an endless exchange. Admin seems reluctant to banish him and I've wondered if that's because he's such a stat booster. Oh cynic that I am.
6/17 UPDATE: The visitor numbers have been running in that low range for a few days, but just now, in the last half hour or so they jumped into the 390s. This is truly a mystery.

Probably bots. Some might be search engine web crawlers. Others might be bots looking for a forum to spam.

Bots would make the numbers suddenly jump from 115 to 398 and hang out there for days? Really?

Problem Using iPhone Nav App with Honda Accord
A friend just got a Honda Accord, same year as mine, so I've been helping her learn how to use the electronics. That includes pairing her iPhone to the car via Bluetooth for hands-free use.
She depends on her phone's navigation app, especially the voice prompts. The problem is that it doesn't work now that the phone is paired with the car.
Since my car has navigation built in, I have no experience with this problem. Has anybody here encountered this problem and have any suggestions?

Re: Problem Using iPhone Nav App with Honda Accord
my dad has had a similar problem with his truck. If he is listening to the radio the truck wont pass the nav app's instructions from the phone to the stereo. This is because the truck treats the nav app the same as it treats streamed music from the phone. If he was listening to music stored on his phone instead of the radio he'd get the nav voice over.
I think i explained that kind of clumsily.
edit: basically the stereo treats the bluetooth signal as either Phonecalls, which overrides everything, and Media, which it will only play if you've told the stereo to use your phone as the current media source.

Re: Problem Using iPhone Nav App with Honda Accord
Thanks. I searched and found a few different suggestions. I gravitated towards one similar to yours and had passed it on. I won't be able to follow up with her until tomorrow night to see whether she tried it or not.
It's at https://ios.gadgethacks.com/...-when-listening-radio-0160397. It says that in the iPhone navigation app there's an audio icon next to a Bluetooth symbol in the lower right-hand corner. audio and Bluetooth. If you press the audio icon, a Navigation Voice settings screen should display. On the bottom of that screen is a switch for "Allow HFP Prompts" (Hands-Free Profile). If you turn that on, then you should be able to hear the phone's prompts over the car's audio. Since I don't use an iPhone, I can't test that. If it works, it might help your father.
Thanks again.

ABE Follow-up:
Couldn't get it to work. Couldn't find the settings screen. Too many variables (different versions, maybe a different app) to try to figure it out within a few minutes, especially since I have near-zero experience with iPhones (I've always found Apple software to be very unfriendly).
She needs to take it in to a dealer for warranty work anyway, so she's going to get them to figure it out.

After a long time (17th to 24th) in the upper 300s to low 400s suddenly this morning the visitor count has dropped to 127. I guess no one knows why? Why big jumps like this?

Re: Mysterious forum stats
They're not people, they're bots and they come and go depending on how often a page is updated, when new links appear and when webmasters change stuff.
Our system regularly crawls your site to provide the most up-to-date content in Google News. Our crawl process is algorithmic; computer programs determine how often we should crawl each site. If you post new articles on your site throughout the day, you should be able to see them appear on Google News fairly quickly. For tips on how to help Google News index and rank your site, we recommend that you review our Webmaster Guidelines.
From the moment that we discover a new article, we'll keep re-crawling it looking for changes. As we've noticed that most changes to articles occur just after they're published, we revisit articles most frequently in the first day after we've found them. After that, we visit them less often.

Thanks. NWR was right then. Must mean there are very few human visitors here.
ABE: That was quick, guess the bots are back. The stats jumped again, to 378.
