Re: Trump "working the room" Priebus fired today...
Does this mean that only the real lunatics are left in the Administration?
I think there continue to be a few high profile sane folk in there, but the crazy factor seems to be increasing with each replacement. Scaramucci coming in as the new Spicer is certainly an "upgrade" in lunacy.

Scaramucci gone?
ABC, NBC, and CBS are all reporting that Scaramucci is out as the White House Communications Director.
Anthony Scaramucci removed as White House communications director - CBS News

President Trump has removed Anthony Scaramucci from his new job as communications director, exactly 10 days after he was named to the position, according to The New York Times.

Re: The Mooch
His hiring provoked the immediate resignation of Sean Spicer and the belated ousting of Chief of Staff Reince Priebus on Friday, July 28.
No matter how bad Scaramucci's replacement is, the mooch did do some swamp draining. He facilitated three departures in just 10 days, all the while providing fun and laughter. Final grade A-.

On the bright side, it shouldn't take long to clean out his desk.
Lol! When prospective employers do their reference checking, I can imagine Kelly saying, "Well, he left a clean desk and did not steal any office supplies. "

Fake news... or Trump missing the point massively.
Apparently, Trump wants to cut down legal immigration by something like 50%.
quote:
Trump cast the proposal as a way to protect American workers by reducing unskilled immigration and creating a merit-based system that grades possible immigrants based on their ability to work in the United States.
"It has not been fair to our people, to our citizens, to our workers," Trump said of the current immigration system, specifically citing low-income and minority workers.
Really? Is that where the complaints have been coming from. Low-income and minority workers are complaining that they cannot get $8.50 per hour jobs cleaning hotel rooms? Surely not.
From a policy position, don't we need younger workers to compensate for the boomer and post boomer-driven aging of our population? Or is this just alt-Right crap ala Bannon to stave off the browning of America?
quote:
Trump backed the effort from Republican Sens. David Perdue and Tom Cotton in a speech at the White House. But the plan faces long odds in Congress.
Tom Cotton? Yeah, I should hope this plan faces long odds.

Trump lying like a rug...
Trump claims that the president of Mexico called him to congratulate him on immigration policy and that the Boy Scouts of America called him to say that Trump had given the greatest speech ever made to them.
Both the president of Mexico and the Boy Scouts deny every making those calls.
Today the White House press secretary says that the phone call from the president of Mexico was actually an in person discussion. That correction came after the Mexican president told us he made no such call.
The chief of the Boy Scouts actually apologized for Trump's speech and says that he made no such call. There has been no explanation at all for this apparent discrepancy.

Re: Fake news... or Trump missing the point massively.
As he has for years, the Republican presidential nominee filed this month to import foreign workers for the jobs instead of hiring Americans, Buzzfeed News first reported Wednesday.
Trump is running his hotel business? Really?

New poll numbers 33% approval ratings
Trump has had an incredibly rocky two weeks, and his poll numbers are beginning to show signs of erosion of Republican support.
quote:
Trump's numbers declined more among Republicans than they did among Democrats, who had already viewed the President unfavorably. In late June, 84% of Republicans approved of Trump's performance -- now, 76% of Republicans say the same. Seventeen percent of Republicans now say they disapprove of the way Trump is performing in the job.
Now 76% represents a huge amount of base support. But I think Trump needs mid to high 80 numbers here if the face of the poor support from independents. So this week's numbers appear to have crossed an ugly line. More data needed to see if these numbers represent a trend.

Re: Trump/Turnbull transcript.
our PM doesn't give two hoots about the people's lives he's playing with
I think you are being overly critical of your Prime Minister. He knows that the US has already vetted those folks and will likely have to take all of them. If Trump decides to redo the process of vetting and reject those folks, there really is not diddly squat that Australia can do about it.
In short, he's just keeping it real. Our president, on the other hand, is whining about looking bad. He used the same narcissistic approach with the president of Mexico. Your PM tried to give Trump some PR advice, but in the end, he insisted that Trump use real numbers instead of fake ones (2000-5000) and he was adamant Trump keep his country's promises. Trump agreed to do just that.

Re: Trump/Turnbull transcript.
Did you read the whole thing?
Actually no. I assumed you had quoted enough to make your points.
I certainly don't agree that Trump looked good and I can't see where Turnbull 'negotiated terribly' but he was certainly underhanded. Turnbull is tough on boat people because it plays on the underlying racism in Australia and wins votes
Yeah, I see that there is quite a bit more going on and a quick bit of research does paint Turnbull in a lot worse light that did the lines you quoted in your first post. I admit to not following what is going on in Australia all that closely. Thanks for responding to my question.

Re: Trump's accomplishments
Accomplishments are apparently in the eye of the beholder. I'll characterize some of these with a view to giving Trump credit where appropriate.
01. Supreme Court Judge Gorsuch - Plus for Republican voters.
02. 59 missiles dropped in Syria. - Not a plus. Did not accomplish much of anything.
03. He took us out of ‘TPP' - We were never in it, but plus for base
04. Illegal immigration is now down 70% (the lowest in 17 years) - Plus for base
05. Consumer confidence highest since 2000 at index 125.6 - continued trend from Obama era; not a plus since Trump has not implemented any economic policy to speak of
06. Mortgage applications for new homes rise to a 7 year high. You might want to check the data on this one. Overall mortgage activity is headed down right now.
07. Arranged 20% Tariff on soft lumber from Canada. - Started a trade war with Canada when other administrations were able to negotiate a deal. Not a plus.
08. Bids for border wall are well underway. - Bids on something for which there is no budget. Not an accomplishment.
09. Pulled out of the lopsided 'Paris Accord'. Plus for wingnuts
10. Keystone pipeline approved. Mixed bag, but plus for base
11. NATO allies boost spending by 4.3% A trivial increase. If they were spending 1.5% of GDP, this would be a bump to 1.56%. In short, not an accomplishment.
12. Allowing VA to terminate bad employees. Plus
13. Allowing private healthcare choices for veterans. The president signed a bill extending a previous program. Not much of an accomplishment.
14. More than 600,000. Jobs created About the same number as were created over the same period last year. In fact somewhat fewer this year.
15. Median household income at a 7 year high. Continuing an existing trend. How much of this, not having screwed things up yet are we going to call accomplishments.
16. The Stock Market is at the highest ever In its history. Apparently just a bit more.
17. China agreed to American import of beef. This was announced in September. Total nonsense that this is on your list.
18. $89 Billion saved in regulation rollbacks. Need some details.
19. Rollback of A Regulation to boost coal mining. An accomplishment that we will suffer for, but the base likes it. Call it an accomplishment for the base.
20. MOAB for ISIS An accomplishment of some sort. Allowed the generals to decide to drop a big bomb. Is this what makes you happy?
21. Travel ban reinstated. Partially reinstated. The portions we all knew were unconstitutional were not reinstated.
I could continue, but frankly, there is enough dubious stuff here, that the entire list ought to be observed as questionable. I see some things that right leaning folks could legitimately enjoy regardless of whether I agree or not. But primary, this top half of the list contains a lot of BS. Trump and his Congress have not passed any major legislation, his buy American plan simply exposes his own hypocrisy since his companies do not "sell American", he's presented himself as a buffoon in front of his supposed allies, blabbed our secrets to our rivals, and has delivered political tirades to the boy scouts. He has yet to fill most of the positions necessary to actually run the government.

Re: Trump's accomplishments
That is the number of 'executive orders' , not bills signed. There is a difference you know.
I did not check the numbers, but I have seen quite a few reports that Trump had signed about 40 bills by the end of June 2017.
Link to a list of his bills.
President Trump Has Signed 40 Laws So Far, Here's What They Do : NPR
15 of his bills used a provision of law making it easy to reverse regulations signed during the last 60 days of the prior administration. Those "easy pickings" are of course all used up.

Re: Trump's accomplishments
n both cases, the president is given credit for many things he had nothing to do with. In free markets, political leadership has nothing to do with much that goes on.
I've already commented on most of these examples. Do you have any response? Is taking credit for stuff for which you have done nothing really an explanation of your support for Trump?
09. Pulled out of the lopsided 'Paris Accord'.
The Paris Accord did not obligate the US to do anything. The sole change is to make folk like you feel better. Apparently, it worked. We're going to be mining a lot of coal that more and more people in the world simply do not want.
