Well, I'm a big fan of [playing the numbers in street lotteries ] and I do believe the anecdotes about [ folks winning some cash ]. There are just too many such stories to ignore. It would be very nice if somebody did a controlled experiment with it of course and I hope somebody will get around to it.
Faith always believes the anecdotes even if there are controlled studies. This is not the first topic on which this exact argument has been introduced. She followed exactly the same logic when it comes to a link between vaccines and autism. After she saw a confirming video, there was no point in even discussing contrary logic or reasoning.
This is exactly the type of logic that gets stories of witchcraft confirmed or convinces others that black cats are bad luck. If you are not convinced by such arguments, the congratulations. You are normal.

Re: Module 4 is also about diet
I said I don't, and asked if you'd show it to me. I'm asking again. Thanks.
I asked the question because I wanted the answer and you gave it. I don't intend to comment further on the subject. In the end, it is a side issue on which I don't want to start a pointless debate.

Did you actually READ any of the testimonials?
You don't get it. Nobody gives a crap how many testimonies you link to. Nor should they...
quote:
Samuel Parris, the Salem minister, would have known every detail of the Goodwin family’s trials from Mather’s much reprinted Memorable Providences. The book included the pages Martha wildly ridiculed. The agitations, writhings, tumblings, tossings, wallowings, foamings in the parsonage were the same, only more acute. The girls cried that they were being stabbed with fine needles. Their skin burned. One disappeared halfway down a well. Their shrieks could be heard from a distance.
Through February, Parris fasted and prayed. He consulted with fellow-clergymen. With cider and cakes, he and his wife entertained the well-wishers who crowded their home. They prayed ardently, gooseflesh rising on their arms. They sang Psalms. But when the minister had had enough of the odd postures and antic gestures, the deranged speeches, when it became clear that Scripture would not relieve the girls’ preternatural symptoms, Parris called in the doctors.
In 1692, a basic medical kit looked little different from an ancient Greek one, consisting as it did of beetle’s blood, fox lung, and dried dolphin heart. In plasters or powders, snails figured in many remedies. Salem village had one practicing physician that winter. He owned nine medical texts; he could likely read but not write. His surgical arsenal consisted of lances, razors, and saws. The doctor who had examined a seizing Groton girl a generation earlier initially diagnosed a stomach disorder. On a second visit, he refused to administer to her further. The distemper was diabolical in origin.
Whoever examined Abigail and Betty arrived at the same conclusion. The evil hand came as no surprise; the supernatural explanation was already the one on the street. The diagnosis likely terrified the girls, whose symptoms deteriorated. It may have gratified Reverend Parris. Witchcraft was portentous, a Puritan favorite. Never before had it broken out in a parsonage. The Devil’s appearance was nearly a badge of honor, further proof that New Englanders were the chosen people. No wonder Massachusetts was troubled by witches, Cotton Mather exulted: Where will the Devil show most malice but where he is hated, and hateth most? The New England ministry had long been on the lookout for the apocalypse, imminent since the sixteen-fifties. The Book of Revelation predicted that the Devil would descend accompanied by infernal fiends. If they were about, God could not be far behind.
Soon the twelve-year-old daughter of a close friend of Parris’s began to shudder and choke. So did the village doctor’s teen-age niece. A creature had followed her home from an errand, through the snow; she now realized that it had not been a wolf at all. The girls named names. They could see the culprits clearly. Not one but three witches were loose in Salem.

Re: There's enough here to show a need for some real research
Had they known how to do a controlled study they might have discovered why it worked.
You are discussing events that occurred well before the creation of either the scientific method or medical studies. Perhaps what constitutes the best decision-making process might be a bit different now?
If I were diagnosed with cancer today would it be unwise to delay chemotherapy for 2 months while I drank a shitload of carrot juice?
Quite possibly, but the right answer depends on the type of cancer and your diagnosis/prognosis right?

Re: There's enough here to show a need for some real research
It is the outright discounting of personal observation that bothers me.
Personal observation of a cancer cure by non-medically trained people should be discounted heavily. It should not be relied upon to the extent that it delays or substitutes consulting a real doctor.

Nutritional theories and regimens can be pretty frustrating because there are so many experts out there who don't all agree on various aspects of what constitutes a healthy diet.
I totally agree.

Registered Dietician Nutritionist
Are dieticians trained?
Yeah, there are some untrained folks who can fool the public, but what about those folks who operate at real medical places.
Runtime Error
"Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) are food and nutrition experts who have met the following criteria to earn the RDN credential:
Completed a minimum of a bachelor’s degree at a US regionally accredited university or college and course work accredited or approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Completed an ACEND-accredited supervised practice program at a health-care facility, community agency, or a foodservice corporation or combined with undergraduate or graduate studies. Typically, a practice program will run six to 12 months in length.
Passed a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). For more information regarding the examination, refer to CDR’s website at - Commission on Dietetic Registration.
Completed continuing professional educational requirements to maintain registration."

"Registered Dietitians (credential R.D.) are leading experts in food and nutrition. Although many people claim to be nutrition experts or may even call themselves nutritionists, only Registered Dietitians have completed rigorous academic and real-world training approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). Becoming an RD requires a 4-year Bachelor’s Degree plus at least 1200 hours of supervised training, followed by passing a national examination. RD’s may be very different than individuals who advertise themselves as Nutritionists or Nutrition Coaches. Some Nutrition certifications are weekend-long programs and no true scientific expertise. For top-tier scientific and medically-based nutrition counseling, be sure to seek out a Registered Dietitian."
Some folks will say anything without even checking as long as it is in defense of some nonsense they believe.

Re: Solutions Should Be Up To The Individual.
Your health should be up to you rather than to some Doctor, Nutritional Guru, or alternative "solution".
Phat, what the %%$# does this mean. Unless you are a minor or someone in one of a relatively few special circumstances, your health is always up to you. However, most folks are not experts on the topic of even their own health.
If you are sick, go to a fucking doctor. BS internet advice is not worth the paper it is printed on. You can make some intelligent choices after a consultation.

Re: DMSO Not FDA Approved Yet It Works
Its odd how we Biblical Christians seem to flock towards non FDA approved cures, isnt it? Buzz did it and Faith also does it
Maybe your acceptance of things goofy is odd. But such "flocking" is not surprising in the least. I would suggest that your pattern of accepting BS is part of a pattern of thinking that you apply to many situations. It is the same pattern that causes folks to think that comets are omens or that Bible codes actually mean something.

Re: Cherry juice, carrot juice, greens as healers
How much do you have to process it before it ceases to be "natural"?
Good question. I tried to look into exactly what steps are used to make cherry juice concentrate, and I ended up looking at a bunch of youtube videos that don't actually answer the question despite having names like "How to make tart cherry juice."
Of course, the claims of the medical benefits of drinking the stuff are all over the internet. A couple of things we do know about the stuff is that it is full of sugar and is as high in calories as any glass of soda. That's enough reason for me to leave that stuff alone.

Re: evidence mounts in favor of plants over meat
What I don't understand is the hostility that is such a regular feature of any discussion here of any topic that's somewhat off the beaten path. I'm not stupid, I know what the standard diet is so I wouldn't be pushing something that is really just the standard recommended diet under a different name.
I'll try to explain what you are calling hostility. I don't believe you will accept the explanation, but...
What you are encounter is not hostility. It is a natural and justified reluctance by others to latch onto yet another supposed fad despite the fact that you yourself have done so. The fact is that much of the information about food and health that is out there, whether it is from gurus or scientists, does not seem to be all that great. There really is no particular reason to latch onto any diet at all.
Yet you do that constantly. This is not the first set of stuff you've come here passionate about, and it is also unlikely to be the last. The reaction you are getting is the same reaction anyone who posts this kind of stuff would get. For example, Percy and I went round and round about weight loss diets a while back over pretty much the same kinds of issues.
As Tangle suggests, there are all kinds of folks out there hawking one thing or another. People seem to form their opinions about them in the same flawed way the form their opinions about everything else.
Beyond those points, there is this. We have over a decade of observation about the way you form opinions. As a result, in addition to the usual skepticism, you are going to get a bit of additional push back. You've already told us how this particular diet fits into your religious beliefs. Once you've done that, we might just as well be arguing about the history of the Grand Canyon when we offer even the slightest bit of reluctance.
. I'm not stupid, I know what the standard diet is so I wouldn't be pushing something that is really just the standard recommended diet under a different name.
No, you are not stupid. Noone is making that accusation.

Re: A couple of studies
I know this is supposed to be a debate site and all that but sometimes I'm more interested in presenting information than debating it, which ought to be allowed on a Coffee House thread.
You don't have to debate. Nothing wrong with that. But this is a debate site, and people are free to comment. About 90 percent of the discussion here is you whining about other folks comments and those folks responding back.
