I don't like the idea of guns being used for hunting. I have no problem with killing animals but make it a fair fight.
I don't like the idea of silencers being used for hunting.

In the real world, why do you think silencers are banned? Do you think our legislators are out to ruin the hearing of hunters?
Ah yes, I forgot we were living in a movie or computer game

We don't get the murderers to write our laws on murder either.
if American gun laws are anything like Canadian gun laws, then they probably weren't written by people who know all that much about firearms.

Like I said, our bills that ban certain medical practices are written by people who are mostly all non-doctors. It might be nice if they consulted with doctors but it isn't mandatory. They don't consult with murderers about banning murder procedures.
My point was that the ones writing the laws might not be all the educated on the subject of the law. Like if I, a non-doctor, was involved in a bill that that banned certain medical practices.

It doesn't matter if silencers have good effects. We ban things because of the bad effects.
My position is the legislators may not be aware that there are non-stealthy-hollywood-murderer reasons for owning a suppressor.

Who said otherwise?
Everything has bad effects. There must be at least some kind of weighing.

That's a distinction without a difference. We do "consult" the murderers indirectly via the psychologists and the police. Gun owners should be "consulted" the same way, via psychologists and the police.
The same principle does not require that we consult murderers on how to punish them. We could instead consult psychologists or the police.

The pertinent question is: Do firearms users in the other states routinely use them for hearing protection?
They are only banned in 8 States of the USA.

Evidence?
Yes. They are used to avoid damaging the ears, to avoid noise pollution complaints when hunting or recreational shooting and to reduce recoil as primary purposes.

So, a fraction of one per cent. There are about a million of them in circulation.... The next question would be: In the states where silencers are illegal, why?

Because of the small number of silencers in actual use, it seems likely that banning and legalizing are both based on local politics.
If correct, 'local politics' seems about right. It seems reasonable to suppose it is correct.

Sounds like an oxymoron to me. The most obvious common-sense measure is don't have guns.
Must gun owners are in favor of common sense control measures....

In Canada we don't consider depriving the mentally ill of their constitutional rights to be "common sense". Then consider "common sense measures" to be US "code words" for doing background checks on all gun sales, not giving guns to folks who have mental illnesses that dispose them towards violence or who have already committed acts of domestic abuse. And in US code, "common sense measures" seems to mean arming the congregation as they come in the door.

I'm pointing out that that's how the US Constitution seems to be interpreted by the NRA and the Supreme Court.
Are you interpreting the US constitution as preventing the state from restricting access to guns by folks who are demonstrated to be violent under a process with the appropriate due process? NoNukes writes:
On the contrary, I'm only putting Canada one or two steps above the US.
... you express the idea that Canada is a virtuous example of constitutional purity. NoNukes writes:
Any dope can have an opinion. It takes a little reflection and understanding to juggle two.
One might think that you don't actually have an opinion of your own and simply like to argue.

Try any Supreme Court decision that interprets "a well regulated milita" as "every hillbilly with a trigger-finger".
Why don't you cite a relevant Supreme Court decision? NoNukes writes:
If you're suggesting that I don't have a doctrinaire pick-a-side-and-stick-to-it opinion, you're right.
I am suggesting that you don't have either an opinion or an understanding.
