When the Ambassador to a Nation is shown to be a liar, why should that Nation place any value in anything the Ambassador, or the Ambassador's boss says? Lol! So you are suggesting that the lying ambassador to the Netherlands might be giving his boss a bad name? Let's recall that this is the same lying boss that retweeted a "Britain First" video with fake Muslim crap in it. Remember what president's spokesperson said in defense of that lie:
quote: How can you embarrass a liar by lying? Hoekstra seems to be representing Trump extremely well. If there is a single aspect of Trump's administration that is a complete and utter failure, it is the in the area of international diplomacy. Whatever allies we still have right now would seem to be hanging despite Trump's best efforts. In the UN vote, it appears that Canada actually abstained rather than appear to be US toadies after Haley's speech. A couple of comments:
It is the eighth biggest since 1918.
Eliminating the mandate should have only a small effect on insurance rates. So a couple more whoppers from the Big House. No surprise there.
Middle class incomes below say $150,000 will average a 1.6% tax cut. An interesting point from which to do averaging... That's why populism works. It invents enemies, your enemies, and vows to destroy them for you. I think populism is latching onto enemies that people already have. I don't think folks like Trump have invented anything. They latch on and inflame what is already there.
(wage stagnation, cultural isolation, a depleted countryside, the opioid crisis). If the Democrats don't have solutions for these things they are done. But I don't think the populist folks want Democratic solutions. They want the Muslims and the Hispanics gone, the black folks in their places, and their football games free from protests. Trump's lawyers sent a cease and desist letter to Michael Wolff's publisher in an attempt to stop the release of his book with Bannon's comments, or to at least blunt the effects of the book. I doubt that such tactics will work. Nothing sells books like a controversy over the contents.
quote: It is possible that the publisher might want to clean up any errors before publication, but simple errors would not make a lawsuit for libel against a public figure or famous politician successful. The standard for success in such a lawsuit would require malice or deliberate indifference to the truth and not simple error. I suspect that the book will be released on schedule. The 'Election Integrity Commission' was a fiasco built on a lie from the very start. The impetus for forming the group was backing up the president's claim that he actually would have won the popular vote but for illegal voting. Trump also claimed that absolutely none of the illegal votes were cast for him. Some remarks from Trump regarding the futility facing the commission:
Donald Trump dissolves voter fraud commission | CNN Politics
quote: Of course, the reality is that 44 out of 50 states and the District of Columbia actually refused to cooperate with the request for voter information primarily because releasing the information violated state law. Now given that 34 Republicans, 15 Democrats, and 1 Independent state are the heads of the state executive branch, I challenge anyone to demonstrate that the obstacles were "mostly Democratic states" as Trump claimed. Nearly every state objected. Edited by NoNukes, : No reason given. Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. Wasn’t a member of the commission suing to get access to the proceedings because he had been completely frozen out ? That’s a pretty good sign that the whole thing was fraudulent. Yes. It was Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap that sued the commission. In fact, Dunlap has prevailed in his lawsuit and a court order has been issued requiring that commission share documentation with him. That is likely the real reason for shutting the commission down. Jeff Sessions released the memo that we've been expecting for a week or so announcing that the Obama era policy of not going after marijuana in those states that have legalized it has been reversed.
Sessions Ends Policy That Allowed States to Embrace Legal Pot | Courthouse News Service
quote: I am not a proponent of drug use, but I'm also not in favor of the current 'war on drugs' which when coupled with the programs to privatize prisons results in very destructive and expensive policies for imprisoning US citizens. These policies also help fund the criminal element in many communities. Some reaction to the new policy:
quote: Polls suggest that 64 percent of Americans are in favor of the decriminalization of marijuana. Perhaps what America really needs is a good dose of f'ed up reactionary policy in action before they figure out that these folks are not your friends. Besides...the strategy behind some of these political decisions seems to be to distract the public from the main issues of the day...which continues to be Muellers investigation, which must be getting too close for comfort. I respectfully disagree. While Mueller's investigation is important, the things folks like Sessions does have lasting impacts that might easily outlast whatever happens to Trump. In fact, I would suggest that the most important and lasting impact of the Trump administration is going to be the appointment of federal judges that the Republican Senate refused to allow Obama to appoint. Potentially that impact is even larger than the single appointment to the Supreme Court that Obama did not get to make. The second largest impact is the ongoing assault being wrought by having Jeff Sessions as the attorney general. In my opinion, appointing Sessions is the single worst thing Trump has done. If Sessions had not been forced to recuse himself, it seems likely that Mueller would be long gone. Edited by NoNukes, : No reason given. Edited by NoNukes, : No reason given. quote: Trump tweeted a denial of having made the above statement. However Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, who was in an Oval Office meeting Thursday when the President called them "s---hole countries has confirmed that the President did use vulgar language to describe the countries from whom he wanted no immigration. Durbin noted that Graham confronted the president about his remarks. What I find amusing is that folks are defending these remarks even as Trump denies having made them. Beyond the racism and jingoism behind Trump's remarks, I think we should point out how misguided they are from a practical view. Generally speaking, why would we expect folks from Norway to immigrate here when on average they have it just as good at home, and by at least some measures better than here. By and large, the reasons for immigration here are twofold. 1) Better their situation financially, politically or both. 2) Reunite family members. Guess what that means? Not many Norwegians and a few more Nicaraguans are going to request to come here. Strip away the racist language, which Trump's denial attempts to do, and what's left is a racist immigration policy. And apparently, folks in Trump's base are more than willing to defend Trump's words on that basis. Namely objecting to the "browning of America". ABE: I did not intend to modify my original remarks, but instead to respond to them. A couple of GOP senators have indicated that they "do not recall" Trump making those remarks. But Lindsey Graham has confirmed that the reports "are basically accurate". At this point. I'm convinced that Trump is now lying. Edited by NoNukes, : No reason given. Trump refuses to visit the opening of a new embassy building in Britain because, well, Obama.
President Trump cancels London visit over 'bad' embassy deal | CNN Politics
quote: Of course this is total crap given that the decision to move the embassy from the old location was made in 2008 by the Bush administration.
quote: I suspect that the real reason for Trump not to visit has to do with the reception he is going to receive. Unlike the situation when Trump visits China or some other countries were dissent is going to be suppressed, Trump can likely expect a combination of boos and cheers with the possibility that the former are more prevalent. Trump has yet to make a state visit.

About that last sentence, I do not think it true that "more Americans speak like President Trump than speak like Jim Acosta." I agree with you Percy. But making the story all about Trump's language is just a deflection that many of Trump's supporters are employing. As disgusting as his language is, the real point is the nature of immigration policy that Trump and his supporters are insisting on. Trump's language and his desire to deport Haitians and not accept African immigrants because they are not "Norwegian enough" are both abominable, but the latter seems to something close to mainstream among Trump supporters and many members of Congress. It actually turns out that Nigerian immigrants are among the most successful highly educated immigrants among all folks who come here. If you want to have a merit-based immigration system, which is what folks claim they want, then such a policy would NOT start with barring folks from a shithole continent. Secondly, the reason a 'chain migration' policy was put in place was to reunite more folks with their families. Sounds pretty humane to me, and apparently, that was okay when more folks were coming here from Germany and Norway. But now, god forbid that Jose wants his brother Julio to come to America. Thirdly, who is going to request to immigrate here anyway? Folks who already have it great at home? Yes, folks who want to come here are in problematic countries, but is that news? What are those words on the Statue of Liberty again? Locker room language is the least thing wrong with what Trump said. Edited by NoNukes, : No reason given. Edited by NoNukes, : No reason given. Not sure if this is getting as much play on the other side of the Atlantic, but Trump recently appointed a new ambassador to the Netherlands. Somebody posted an article about it here.
Is this ideology trumping policy? Is it an intentional distraction from more important issues? Nothing is deemed more important than letting the folks at home know that you are putting another country second. Because that seems to be the way to put America first. At least Trump has gotten around to appointing a diplomat for your country. Edited by NoNukes, : No reason given. Edited by NoNukes, : No reason given. It's not my country, I just have family connections. Yes. I should have noticed that you were not from the Netherlands.
He held the US attorney-general's wife hostage in a hotel room. And now he's a US ambassador. You couldn't make this shit up. Ineptitude is not a strategy. I suspect that Trump did not know all of that stuff. Let's remember that Trump appointed a man to be a federal district court judge who had no idea how to conduct a trial. quote: I did not speak about the politics in my post. What I will say, is that I don't see any reason to distinguish between the folks fearing how minorities will vote from the rest of the racists, particularly if their reaction to reality is to stop minorities from voting or to stop folks from coming to this country. And yes, I understand exactly how harsh that sounds. I understand that my remarks apply to some folks who post here. I don't believe most folks, or even most Republican voters are racist. But the prevalence of racism is a bit higher than most folks can comfortably admit. I'll note here that the meeting with Trump was intended to feature just two folks, Senators Durbin and Graham who had been working with a bipartisan group to come up with an immigration proposal. Trump invited several other Republican "immigration hardliners" to join Grahan and Durbin because it was Trump's intent to torpedo the effort. Well, mission accomplished. Republican Lindsey Graham spoke up at the meeting after Trump's remarks. Durbin did as well, and he also was willing to confirm the reports of Trump's offensive remarks. Cudos to those folk. Two of the Republicans hardliners that attended now claim they "don't recall" what Trump said and the others are silent. Expect to hear more folks who are proud to have a president who isn't PC and uses locker room talk. Most of those folks are not racists. But that also is not what the real point is.
