Dennis Edwards passed away on February 1, 2018
While I was checking for information on John Barlow, I noticed that Dennis Edwards, lead singer for the Temptations had passed away last week. Edwards replace David Ruffin as the lead singer in 1968 when Ruffin became unpredictable and started missing gigs. After his firing, Ruffin would occasionally show up and try to crash the stage during Temptations concerts.
Edwards was battling meningitis at the time of his death and died in a Chicago hospital 2 days before his 75th birthday.

Billy Graham
One of the few American Evangelists with integrity who avoided scandel and arguably influenced the largest global audience of them all has passed peacefully at age 99.
America's Pastor' Billy Graham Dies At 99
quote:
...His wife thought he was too loud and too theatrical, but in midcentury America it was a style that worked. As a handsome, blue-eyed young preacher, he projected wholesomeness and charisma. He could command the stage, and his delivery proved perfect for radio and television.(...)Whereas many previous evangelists had embraced a fiery fundamentalism, Graham was more inclusive. In an unusual twist for a Southern Baptist evangelical preacher, Graham coordinated his Madison Square Garden rally with some big New York churches.
"His determination to cooperate with mainline Protestants and with Roman Catholics alienated his fundamentalist friends,"
My Aunt used to adore him. She was a staunch Southern Baptist who was one of the most honest people I ever knew.

Chance as a real force is a myth. It has no basis in reality and no place in scientific inquiry. For science and philosophy to continue to advance in knowledge, chance must be demythologized once and for all. —RC Sproul

Re: Billy Graham
Ironically, it was Billy Graham who over half a century ago changed my life for the best.
As a child, I attended our neighbors' Protestant church. One Sunday, a group from church took me to a Billy Graham revival. That motivated me to be baptized, and then to get serious and learn just exactly what I was supposed to believe. So I started reading the Bible, through which I discovered that I just could not possibly believe that stuff. Since I couldn't believe what I was supposed to, I left. Even though I was still a bit below the traditional age of confirmation, I present myself as a "confirmed atheist."
Everything I've encountered since then has confirmed my decision: learning the history of Christianity, learning fundamentalist theology as a fellow traveler of the Jesus Freak Movement, studying "creation science", decades of repeated encounters with creationists and with "true Christians."
If not for Billy Graham, I would very likely have not found my path.

Stephen Hawking - the Evolution Fairytales connection
Was doing one of my occasional checkings of what's happening at "Evolution Fairytales" and I also decided to look at the somewhat affiliated "Real Science Radio". There I found:
Recall Bob Enyart Interviews Stephen Hawking from 20 Years Ago?
Which has available 43:20 of audio.
At the previous link they include:
RSR: Stephen Hawking is a Lunatic
Which has available 27:46 of audio.
I haven't at all listened to any of this. But it must be good, coming from such "monuments of journalism".

Linda Brown
Linda Brown, the child in question in Brown vs Board of Education died. She was only 76.
The most significant thing I remember about the facts surrounding the case was the utter disconnect between reality and the "School Board". At that time the norm in much of the US, both North and South was separate but equal. The reality was Separate but Unequal. Yet in Linda's life it was even worse. She lived and grew up in a mixed race neighborhood where the kids she played with daily, her friends that came for sleep overs and for pajama parties and dinner and birthdays were both white and black. Yet every morning she could not walk to the neighborhood school with her white friends, eat lunch with them, play with them during recess. Instead she had to line up with the other black faces and get on a bus that took her to a different school, away from all her friends.
At the time Linda would have been in the third or fourth grade and hated the fact that she could not go to school with her friends.
That is the reality of segregation at the time. It involved people, people trying to do normal people things; go to school with your friends and neighbors, have paved streets and city water and sewer, sit anywhere there was an empty seat on the bus, sit at the lunch counter and eat, drink from the fountain when thirsty, get a haircut, go in the front door.
Little things but oh so big.

Arthur William Bell III (June 17, 1945 — April 13, 2018)
Art Bell - Wikipedia
Found out via PZ Myers:
A double-wide in Pahrump, Nevada is haunted now
PZ says "He was last century’s less mean-spirited Alex Jones. Now dead."
I read somewhere that Art holds (or at least held) the record for the longest continuous on-air stretch, something over 100 hours.
