Forum has been - and still is - very slow, large post-posting delays and frequent 503s. Been going on for a week or so now.

Don't be so negative. During the last few weeks in the eastern DRC it took 20 minutes just to make a normal phone call. You have to wait for the right satellite to go around. Russian satellites work better than US satellites. Then you also only get connected when the whether is nice. The SA satellites can more-or-less be described as cr*p. The Chinese satellites work better than the others, though.

Edited by Pressie, : No reason given.

No sure what your point is. I'm only comparing this site with other sites on the same computer at the same time, presumably using the same satellites.

Same thing happening today. Every page takes so long to load that I can go and post on another site while I'm waiting.

The 503s are back and have been for a couple of weeks, random but frequent. Latest at 12.48 BST

Still more 503s

Just lost a post and had a double post. Long delays now with 30% chance of a 503. Pretty much unusable again.

It can't just be me? I'm getting 503s 75% of the time now.

Its hard for me to get on our site too, Tangle. Usually, its early in the mornings before 5 am...which is afternoon in Britain, I believe.

The forum has logged me out about a dozen times this morning. That never happened before.

And our geese will blot out the sun.

Could be what's been happening to me
This might be what I've been experiencing for months now. I finally tracked down the cause to having had more than one EvC page open at the same time., especially if one is logged in and the other one isn't. Clue: Before posting a message, check to see if your name is listed as online AND it says "Login" rather than "Logout" on the top line. If it does you're going to get booted off again to the login page. I asked about this some time ago and was told to clear cookies. That does nothing. But if I log in and then out a series of times, with a final logout, and then reboot, I'm usually OK until I make the mistake of opening two pages again, which for some reason happens from time to time. Best to have a standing policy of copying every message before posting it so you won't lose it.

Sorry if this doesn't explain your problem.

Edited by Faith, : No reason given.

Auto-logout Problems
There's no code to automatically log people out. You should be able to have hundreds of EvC pages open simultaneously, and if you log out or log in on one of them, then that new login status will become the status for all the pages (once refreshed). This is because cookies are shared by browser/domain across of pages open on that browser/domain. All cookies of EvC pages open in, say, Chrome are the same. It isn't possible to be logged in on one Chrome/EvC page while simultaneously logged out on another. It might look that way temporarily, but once both pages are refreshed you'll find that they're either both logged in or both logged out.

An EvC page that says you're, say, logged out when you're actually logged in cannot cause you to become logged out. Your status of being logged in or logged out is controlled by cookies, not by the static text near the top of the page that indicates your login status (it'll say "Welcome, Member Percy" if you're logged in or "Welcome! You are not logged in." if you're not logged in).

Cookies become confused if you have one page using "evcforum.net" and another using "www.evcforum.net", but the software forces all accesses to EvC to be "www.evcforum.net". It shouldn't be possible to have a page using "evcforum.net", but if you've somehow managed to do that then that could account for the problem. Trying to think of possible ways that could happen, I've never played with Incognito mode, maybe that's a possibility.

If anyone learns anything more about this problem please let me know, maybe something will give me a clue that helps solve this.
