Author | Topic: Immigrants good for me and you? Bad? How to make a good answer that is accurate? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The Rio Grande Valley may be a great representation of what Latino and Hispanic immigration influence might mean.
First some basics. The Rio Grande Valley is four counties that border the Rio Grande river. It is predominately a Latino/Hispanic community with 90% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino. The county I live in is Hidalgo and it is over 80% Hispanic or Latino. The city is Mission and it too is 80% Hispanic or Latino. Traditionally it has been an open border until pretty recently and it was common to cross the border for dinner or groceries or work or school or health care or visit family and friends with nothing more in the way of identification than a drivers license or id card. The system was pretty much the same as at the US/Canadian border; "What's the purpose of your visit? Do you have anything to declare? Have a nice day." The Rio Grande Valley is generally pretty liberal and 69% of the votes in the last Presidential election were for Clinton and both the Libertarian and Green Party also received votes. The area is relatively poor with a median income of just over $30,000.00. A significant portion of the population speaks only Spanish with that being common among US born families as well as immigrants. The family across the street from me is an example. The husband was born and raised in the US and speaks ONLY Spanish while his wife was born and educated in Mexico and speaks Spanish, English, French and conversational Italian. Another significant portion of the local population lives here in the US but goes daily across the border to work in the maquiladoras which are the major industrial base in the area. This side of the river is primarily agricultural, small business and tourist based. The cities across the border in Mexico are generally significantly larger and more populated than those on this side of the border. The Mexican side is a more diverse mix of economic development with industry, agriculture, finance and tourism bases.

Faith writes: Open Borders is having no standards. Only in the mind of the Cult of Ignorance and those totally disconnected from reality. All of our laws sill stand as well as all of our societal norms. The standards are still there and that was the norm for most of my life; you arrived at a border and when leaving they waved at you and when entering they asked you a few questions. The same process in reverse happened when you returned. No passports were needed in either direction and the system worked.

Faith writes: I'm for bias and bigotry if it means excluding criminals, jihadists and leftists/communists/ and people who poop on sidewalks.. Too funny. You certainly are worthy of a chuckle or three. Open borders does not mean it becomes legal to commit crimes in the US and being a leftist or communist is not illegal in the US anyway. But your bigotry does shine through.

And speaking of Jhadists; all of the 9-11 terrorists entered the US with valid Visas. None of them waded the Rio Grande or wandered through the scrub or suffered the 100+ temperatures for a hike of tens of miles without water or supplies.
Faith is simply totally disconnected from reality.

I wonder why people who hate socialism still drive on public roads, go to public schools, use public libraries, accept public police and fire services, visit public parks, walk on public sidewalks, use public street lights, accept Social Security and Federal or State Disaster aid?

Faith writes: Universal education was originally a Christian project, and literacy was promoted to foster the reading of the Bible. I'm sorry Faith but that is simply not true and not true by almost a thousand years. It was Mohammad who promoted universal education so that everyone could read the glorious Qur'an. The Muslims were the great educators and their universities far outstripped anything seen in the world before or really since. The pinnacle was Muslim Spain from around 700 until 1492 when barbaric Christianity invaded Spain.

There was even more. As Islam spread Arabic became the lingua franca of the world. And with the emphasis on education most of the existing books from every society were translated in Arabic and copied into the great libraries throughout Andalusian Spain. At the time when a great library in Christian Europe might have fifty books there were literally dozens of libraries each with thousands of books in every one of the major Andalusian cities.
While the original intent of the education Mandate by Mohammad was religious in nature the unintended consequence had far greater impact bringing scholars and the accumulated knowledge from as far away as China and India to Andalusian Spain where a common language allowed Jew and Christian and Muslim and Hindu and Buddhist and Taoist to freely exchange their knowledge and experiences.

Actually Faith Mohammad's specific instruction was for Universal education and literacy.
Without Islam we would not be holding this conversation.

Faith writes: You might try addressing the actual topic instead of proliferating rabbit trails. I am addressing the actual topic by providing actual evidence. What is in the post you are replying to are Arabic Numbers. Islam gave us the concept of Universal Education, Science, the Scientific Method, Zero, Arabic Numbers, Analytic Geometry, Algebra; all of the things on which modern Western Civilization is based. And in fact, all of those things were the product of immigration, bringing together people from all over the Islamic world to share ideas. Immigration brings us new ideas, new perspectives, new genes and new cultural possibilities.

Faith writes: That is a lot of hot air that proves precisely nothing about universal education as an Islamic innovation. Except for a few facts Faith. First the topic is about whether immigration is good or bad. Second, the post you replied to covered even more than just the fact that Muhammad mandated that all learn to read and write.

Faith writes: Multiculturalism is a Satan-inspired weapon for destroying Christian culture The Christianity that might get destroyed by multiculturalism is simply a pathetic perversion of every good thing about Christianity; a worthless caricature of what Jesus message was and quite honestly, worthless and without merit already. It is a pathetic joke; a cult opposed to honesty, worshiping ignorance and with no contact with truth or reality. You are of course free to try to market something that silly but don't be surprised when folk simply laugh.
