Today is Voting Day
Today is voting day, so go vote!
I hope we go to the polls and prove that Trump is not who we are, but for this to be a valid referendum on the Trump dumpster fire everyone must vote. So whether you're a liberal softie or a conservative hardnose or an independent vacillator, vote.

Re: Darrell Issa concedes
I’ve been keeping away from this and other fora for a while, to manage my stress and fear for the world.
But on an important day like today, I wanted to wish all decent people in the States the best: for the start of a fight-back; for the recollection that fear and hatred are the start of all evil; for the belief that mankind is better than tribalism and insularity; for the hope that we can remember what we fought for in WW2; and to recognise and to fight against the resurgence of the evil that so many of our grandfathers and grandmothers gave up their lives to defeat and to deny to their last breath. I have visited the Holocaust Museum in Berlin - and the language of the Right increasingly resembles that of the National Socialists in the 1930s.
Time to say this isn’t us. We fought against that. We’re better than that.
Good luck, all true Americans.

Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Meh
I haven't yet had a chance to look at last night's election results in detail, but from what I see so far, meh.
The Democrats took the House and should have a roughly 10-20 seat majority. That's a significant change because it means there will again be a system of checks and balances instead of a rubber stamp.
But there were no big Democratic wins or upsets. Democrats lost in all the key races. Beto O'Rourke lost to Ted Cruz in the Texas Senate race, Andrew Gillum lost to Ron DeSantis in the Florida gubernatorial race, Bill Nelson lost to Rick Scott in the Florida Senate race, and though it hasn't been called yet it looks like Stacey Abrams is going down to defeat in the Georgia gubernatorial race.
And there was some very bad news: the Republicans picked up four Senatorial seats and now have a 54-46 majority, at least. Joe Donelly lost to Mike Braun in Indiana, incumbent Heidi Heitkamp lost ot Kevin Cramer in North Dakota, incumbent Claire McCaskill lost to Josh Hawley in Missouri, and as mentioned earlier Bill Nelson lost to Rick Scott in Florida.
This big Republican advantage in the Senate takes away all Democratic influence. Jeff Flake is gone. Bob Corker is gone. Attempts at influencing Republican moderates like Susan Collins of Maine or Lisa Murkowski of Alaska to vote against Trump are rendered fruitless because the Republicans no longer need their votes. The election was a disaster for Senatorial Democrats.
Last night's election results can be summed up like this: the Democrats got the boobie prize. They now control the elected body with the least power. It's better than nothing, and if they play their cards right by not overplaying their cards they may help insure that there is no Trump second term. But unless they figure out a way to work with the Senate there will be no significant legislation over the next two years.
I haven't yet seen a summary of gubernatorial results, nor of state legislatures, which will control how state districts are redrawn after the next census, but my guess is that Republicans still control enough to make sure there are plenty of gerrymandered districts. I think it likely that Republicans have enough to make sure most elections will fall their way all through the 2020 decade. The Democrats aren't going to get anywhere if it takes at least a 56-44% popular vote advantage just to break even.
Speaking now to Trump supporters, I do not understand how most of you summarize your feelings about Trump by saying things like, "I wish he would tweet less, but he's doing the things I want." You are idiots. Trump is possibly the worst excuse for a human being ever to occupy the office, and certainly by far the biggest liar, but more importantly, he is telling you he is making your lives better while he's robbing you blind and making fools of you. He's making sure wages are low for the benefit of the corporations he loves so much. He cut taxes for the middle class a little while cutting taxes for corporations a lot. He's taking away your healthcare while lying that he's making it wonderful. He's working you up into a frenzy about things like immigrant caravans that in the end will amount to little. Again, you are idiots.
Who do I like most for president in 2020? That's a long way off, but right now I like Beto O'Rourke.

Re: Meh
I had the same response to the election outcome. It really isn't anything to sing about. The highly touted 'Blue Wave' turned into little more than a blue trickle. As you said, they have Congress. But honestly, when you look at how many seats the Democrats gained relative to other midterm years, it really is pretty average.
More to the point, the Republicans have solidified their hold on the senate. That means treaties and future Supreme Court confirmations are pretty much in the bag. Not sure if there will be other vacancies; but Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 85 years old and is having health issues. So there is a possibility that one of the leading left leaning voices in the court could be replaced by another conservative.
On the upside, with Dems in control of Congress, at least that will allow for some checks on the White House, including spending controls. They can easily block funding for the border wall and also with subpoena power, they can start delving more into investigations. However, it will be for show mostly. Unless there is some smoking gun to be found. Although honestly, if it existed, I think it would have been found by now.
My one takeaway from this election is that the Democrats can't just function as the 'anti-Trump' party. They need to start putting forth a more cohesive message and set of ideas. Trump may be unpopular with people on the left, but he seems to have an uncanny charisma for those on the right. So it can't be just about pointing to his flaws. Granted, there are MANY flaws. But in the end, he will continue to tweet and he will continue to sling mud. We can sling mud back. But the end result of that is that everyone just gets covered in mud.
I think a big issue that the Dems should focus on is how the tax cuts are exploding our debt. If it is one thing that resonates with conservatives, its fiscal policy. So while the economy is doing well, our debt is rising. A simple tactic is to start asking why large deficits were unacceptable under Obama but perfectly acceptable under Trump. Hammer them on that. They may try hyperbole saying tax cuts will eventually lead to more taxable income. But the data will debunk that. So I would press the Republicans on that. They always are supposed to be the party of fiscal common sense, so attacking them on their own turf in that regard could sway independents. Which is what wins elections.

My take
My one takeaway from this election is that the Democrats can't just function as the 'anti-Trump' party. They need to start putting forth a more cohesive message and set of ideas. ...
They need to stop being anti-progressive and they need to return to being for workers.
Progressives count for a large number of the seats taken last night, and their message/s have resonated with voters. They need to end dependence on corporate campaign donations or they will continue to be republican lite, and voters will continue to see them as cut from the same cloth.
Health care and minimum wage issues resonate as positive issues.
Enjoy

What Should House Democrats Do First
An editorial in today's Washington Post recommends The first five things the Democrats should do with their House majority:
  • Raise the minimum wage to $15/hour.
  • Fix the damage Republicans have done to healthcare.
  • Restore the Voting Rights Act and reverse Republican voter-suppression efforts.
  • Address infrastructure.
  • Save DACA.
Seems like a good list, but of course they'll have to work with the Senate and Trump will have to sign it.

Re: My take
They need to stop being anti-progressive and they need to return to being for workers.
I don't get the sense that Democrats are anti-progressive. I would actually say that the social justice crowd has actually gone a little overboard with some of their tactics, such as shouting down speakers at universities or throwing temper tantrums if they hear something they don't like.
I think the solution is that Democrats need to start acting like liberals again. That means focusing on individual identity, not collective identity. But as you stated, being for workers is the area that Democrats have completely abandoned. Now, Democrats are functioning like plutocrats in placating to Wall Street in the same way that the Republicans do. Hillary Clinton personified this as she was essentially in the back pocket of Goldman Sachs and there was little distinction between her and other candidates when it comes to bending over for wealthy donors.
Democrats need to start listening to the common man again instead of just surrounding themselves with celebrities because they think it will sway the youth vote. For the record, most celebrities are vacuous airheads that care little about politics and are more concerned about getting into the limelight. I would like to see Democrats having honest conversations with workers and finding real solutions to the problems they face. If workers are upset about jobs being shipped overseas, tackle that problem directly. If they are concerned about immigrants taking their jobs, talk to them and explain the truth. Ignoring their concerns just allows the fear mongering from the right to fester.

It will be interesting to see if the Senate and/or Trump will stand against bills that protect people with pre-existing conditions. If they do, it will be used against them in 2020.
I live in a deep Red state where Republicans won every state-wide race and both House seats. However, the proposition to extend Medicare to more people (aka Obamacare) passed 60-40, even in a very deep red state. We will see if Republicans can find their way in this new reality where people actually prefer Democratic policies when it comes to health care.

There goes Jeff Sessions
Jeff Sessions out as attorney general | CNN Politics

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump on Wednesday fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
"At your request I am submitting my resignation," Sessions wrote in a letter to White House chief of staff John Kelly.
Matthew Whitaker will take over as acting attorney general, the President said.

Rosenstein, presumably. Since they don't have a third in charge right now the line of succession would then go to the number 4 person in the DoJ which is Solicitor General Noel Francisco. It just so happens that Francisco was the lawyer for the Trump campaign before being appointed. To prevent Francisco from recusing himself they have already issued an executive order for an ethics waiver back in April. They have been planning this for a while.
IOW, Trump already has plans of putting his own lawyer in charge of the investigation into his own wrongdoings. It's as if he is going out of his way to create new articles of impeachment against himself.

Trump Holds a Press Conference
Trump held a press conference today, just the second of his presidency. If you'd like to see the whole thing here it is:
If you'd like to read an article calling the president to task for the many misstatements and lies he told during the press conference, then here's one: Trump’s bizarre post-election press conference, explained.
And if you'd like to see just the part where Trump attacks CNN's Jim Acosta and NBC's Peter Alexander, here it is:
