Dumbty Trumpty dereliction and treason
Does failure to impose sanctions on Russia, after they were overwhelmingly approved by bipartisan supermajority, NOT constitute giving aid and comfort to Russia, a known enemy?
Is this a serious question? ...
The question is when does he cross the line with each baby step in the destruction of America?
The Mueller investigation continues, obstruction of justice continues (by Trump and other Republicans), the assault on our democracy continues.
I expect that the results of the investigation will show
  • Money laundering (for Russians)
  • Emolument clause violations (use of his hotels and golf courses by Russians and other foreign dignitaries)
  • Dealing with foreign agents (Russian)
  • Dereliction of duty in regards to sanctions (on Russia)
  • Corruption of Justice (interfering in the Russian investigation)
  • Treason

Re: Dumbty Trumpty dereliction and treason
Only in a civilian context. Legally, treason requires us to be at war.
Julius and Ethel Rosenberg - Wikipedia
quote:
In imposing the death penalty, Kaufman noted that he held the Rosenbergs responsible not only for espionage but also for deaths in the Korean War:
I consider your crime worse than murder... I believe your conduct in putting into the hands of the Russians the A-Bomb years before our best scientists predicted Russia would perfect the bomb has already caused, in my opinion, the Communist aggression in Korea, with the resultant casualties exceeding 50,000 and who knows but that millions more of innocent people may pay the price of your treason. Indeed, by your betrayal you undoubtedly have altered the course of history to the disadvantage of our country. No one can say that we do not live in a constant state of tension. We have evidence of your treachery all around us every day for the civilian defense activities throughout the nation are aimed at preparing us for an atom bomb attack.[31]

Technically we weren't at war with Russia then.
The definition in the Constitution doesn't require being at war: "... or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them aid and comfort. ... " (Article III section 3
I'm sure there are plenty of laws governing passing classified information to the Russians or aiding them in other ways (not enforcing sanctions).

My take
My one takeaway from this election is that the Democrats can't just function as the 'anti-Trump' party. They need to start putting forth a more cohesive message and set of ideas. ...
They need to stop being anti-progressive and they need to return to being for workers.
Progressives count for a large number of the seats taken last night, and their message/s have resonated with voters. They need to end dependence on corporate campaign donations or they will continue to be republican lite, and voters will continue to see them as cut from the same cloth.
Health care and minimum wage issues resonate as positive issues.

Re: My take
I don't get the sense that Democrats are anti-progressive. ...
The DNC tried to squash a number of progressive candidates, and they have said that the progressives will be put on a leash if elected.
I think the solution is that Democrats need to start acting like liberals again. ...
Agreed, and that means more than supporting Medicare for All and $15/hr minimum wage. They need to welcome the other liberal parties into a broader liberal base, from the Green Party to the Working Families Party to the Social Democrats Party.
They need to be serious about climate change and how our armed forces are used around the world, take responsibility for the results of interfering in other countries that then results in refugees.
Have open nation wide primaries and use ranked or instant runoff voting to whittle down candidates to ones that are strong consensus candidates. The 2020 election could have a bucket load of candidates, and the archaic first-past-the-post single vote system is an abject failure at dealing with more than 2 candidates (why Arnold won governor of California).
Democrats need to start listening to the common man again ...
They need to take a good hard long look at what Beto O'Rourke accomplished in heavy red-state Texas, nearly winning (48.3% to 51% for Cruz).
... I would like to see Democrats having honest conversations with workers and finding real solutions to the problems they face. If workers are upset about jobs being shipped overseas, tackle that problem directly. If they are concerned about immigrants taking their jobs, talk to them and explain the truth. Ignoring their concerns just allows the fear mongering from the right to fester.
Education plus listening, and putting together an immigration program that meets the needs of people and the companies that need workers -- jobs Americans don't seem to want ...

Re: My take
If you had some kind of runoff voting system then there's no need for open primaries. The only reason you have this strange primary system in the US is because your system favours everyone deciding to get behind one of two candidates. ...
It's the one person one vote issue, and this only works with two candidates.
I like to think of the the primaries as a whittling process, weeding out the worst candidates, but also a means to introduce the candidates to the voters. Bernie had little name-recognition compared to Clinton in the early primaries.
... Change the system to one without this bias and the Republican and Democratic parties would be free to fracture into parties representing the half a dozen or so ideologies they currently subsume.
Indeed, but we can start with the Democrat primaries.

Mondragon Corporation Cooperatives
Uh, actually that would be the Social Democrats. Democratic Socialists are an entirely different beast based on a very different economic and social model. It is very easy to get the names switched. It is very unfortunate that our social democrats have gotten the names wrong.
It seems to me that the best working example of Social Democracy is the Mondragon Corporation:
quote:
The Mondragon Corporation is a corporation and federation of worker cooperatives based in the Basque region of Spain. It was founded in the town of Mondragon in 1956 by graduates of a local technical college. Its first product was paraffin heaters. It is the tenth-largest Spanish company in terms of asset turnover and the leading business group in the Basque Country. At the end of 2014, it employed 74,117 people in 257 companies and organizations in four areas of activity: finance, industry, retail and knowledge.[3] By 2015, 74,335 people were employed.
Mondragon cooperatives operate in accordance with the Statement on the Co-operative Identity maintained by the International Co-operative Alliance.
This framework of business culture has been structured based on a common culture derived from the 10 Basic Co-operative Principles, in which Mondragon is rooted: Open Admission, Democratic Organisation, the Sovereignty of Labour, Instrumental and Subordinate Nature of Capital, Participatory Management, Payment Solidarity, Inter-cooperation, Social Transformation, Universality and Education.[20]
This philosophy is complemented by four corporate values: Co-operation, acting as owners and protagonists; Participation, which takes shape as a commitment to management; Social Responsibility, by means of the distribution of wealth based on solidarity; and Innovation, focusing on constant renewal in all areas.[21]
Cooperatives run democratically by the workers and making business decisions based on shared values instead of authoritarian decisions from owner capitalists, and working within a capitalistic economy.

Re: I apologize for being a Paul Krugman fanboy
It's amazing they still push the trickle-down crap after so many failures, especially Brownback's Kansas fustercluck.
That's because it isn't about money actually trickling down, it's all about creating a huge deficit and putting the money in 1% pockets.
Only the ignorant base believe it.

Re: I apologize for being a Paul Krugman fanboy
Giving money to the rich starves the economy. Getting money into the hands of the middle class and the poor feeds and invigorates the economy.
The economy is the movement of money, not the possession of it. This is why the stock market is not a measure of the movement of money so much as a measure of the possession of it (it doesn't go anywhere except stock market statements).

Modern Monetary Theory (MMT)
Democrats in charge: deficits come down, but Republicans scream about out of control spending.
Republican in charge: budget deficit explodes, Republicans now remarkably complaisant.
Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
Democrats (Progressives) need to understand and embrace MMT:
quote:
Modern Monetary Theory or Modern Money Theory (MMT) is a heterodox macroeconomic theory that describes currency as a public monopoly for the government and unemployment as evidence that a currency monopolist is overly restricting the supply of the financial assets needed to pay taxes and satisfy savings desires.[1][2] MMT is seen as an evolution of chartalism and is sometimes referred to as neo-chartalism.
MMT advocates argue that the government should use fiscal policy to achieve full employment, creating new money to fund government purchases. According to advocates, the primary risk once the economy reaches full employment is inflation, which can be addressed by raising taxes and issuing bonds to remove excess money from the system.[3] MMT is controversial, with active debate[4] about its policy effectiveness and risks. Its macroeconomic policy prescriptions have been described as being a version of Abba Lerner's theory of functional finance.
MMT states that a government that issues its own money:
  1. Can pay for goods, services, and financial assets without a need to collect money in the form of taxes or debt issuance in advance of such purchases;
  2. Cannot be forced to default on debt denominated in its own currency;
  3. Is limited in its money creation and purchases by inflation, which accelerates once the real resources (labor, capital and natural resources) of the economy are utilized at full employment;
  4. Can control demand-pull inflation[5] by taxation and bond issuance, which remove excess money from circulation, although the political will to do so may not always exist;
  5. Does not need to compete with the private sector for scarce savings by issuing bonds.
These tenets challenge the mainstream economics view that government spending should be funded pre-emptively by taxes and debt issuance.[6][7][4]
I've started a thread on this.
See Modern Monetary Theory (MMT)

Perverse Perseverating much?
This is all he's thinking about.
And it gets worse ...
quote:
Agency reverses course on Trump's Alabama hurricane claim
WASHINGTON (AP) A federal agency reversed course Friday on the question of whether President Donald Trump tweeted stale information about Hurricane Dorian potentially hitting Alabama, upsetting meteorologists around the country.
On Sunday, Trump had warned that Alabama, along with the Carolinas and Georgia, was "most likely to be hit (much) harder than anticipated."
The National Weather Service in Birmingham, Alabama, tweeted in response: "Alabama will NOT see any impacts from #Dorian. We repeat, no impacts from Hurricane #Dorian will be felt across Alabama. The system will remain too far east."
But the president has been adamant throughout the week that he was correct, and the White House has deployed government resources and staff to back him.
The latest defense came out Friday evening, when the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a statement from an unidentified spokesman stating that information provided by NOAA and the National Hurricane Center to the president had demonstrated that "tropical-storm-force winds from Hurricane Dorian could impact Alabama." The advisories were dated from last Wednesday, Aug. 28, through Monday, the statement read.
Alabama was not mentioned in any of the 75 forecast advisories the hurricane center sent out between Aug. 27 and Sept. 2. Nor was any Alabama city mentioned in the charts that listed percentage chances of tropical storm force winds or hurricane force winds. Every state along the U.S. East Coast as well as Canada and inland places like Washington, D.C. was mentioned in those charts, but not Alabama.
Dan Sobien, president of the union representing weather service employees, tweeted Friday, "Let me assure you the hard working employees of the NWS had nothing to do with the utterly disgusting and disingenuous tweet sent out by NOAA management tonight."
Ludicrous that a (purportedly) grown man goes to such lengths.

Trump's Horrid Video ...
But remember, Pence is a far bigger threat to democracy than Trump.
I'm not so sure anymore. Pence wants an evangelical christian theocratic America. Trump wants to destroy America.
Recent events with Turkey and Syria show this.
And now there are reports of a horrific video
quote:
Gruesome Video of Fake Trump Killing Media in Mass Shooting Played at One of His Resorts
At a time when our nation is facing an epidemic of mass shootings, supporters of President Donald Trump showed a violent depiction of a fake Trump massacring members of the news media using a gun and other weapons at a conference held at one of the president’s resorts, the New York Times reported Sunday night.
American Priority, a group that supports the president, hosted the conference at Trump National Doral Miami.
Bloomberg technology reporter William Turton surfaced a video matching the description from the Times on YouTube. The video appears to have been uploaded by YouTube account TheGeekzTeam in July 2018, and the account has posted other videos doctored to make it look like Trump is violently killing his enemies. Although Turton said he has not yet been able to confirm the YouTube video was the same one played at the conference, the details in the video as described by the Times line up, although portions like the Barack Obama interview at the end of the video were not reported to have been shown.
We can probably expect more of this as part of his campaign both against impeachment and for re-election. We can also expect some of his base supporters to act out.
I choose to not link the video.
Yikes.
