Hi, cavediver.
Someone on a medical drama recently pronounced it that way, too. That show instantly lost all credibility with me (although I don't now remember which one it was). -Bluejay (a.k.a. Mantis, Thylacosmilus) Darwin loves you.

Hi, Larni.
Larni writes: And what's with route and lever and vase? How do y'all pronounce these words? Americans might say "rowt" or "root," depending on region and individual. All Americans I've ever heard say "lever" pronounce it "leh-ver." But, people faking British accents always say, "lee-ver." Americans may say "vayss" or "vahz." I have always felt that "vahz" was how snobby, rich people who want to sound sophisticated say it. -Bluejay (a.k.a. Mantis, Thylacosmilus) Darwin loves you.

Vase is Varse pretty much all the through the UK.
Lever is Leever, too. Route is always Root. One that always got me was Aluminium is Al-la-min-ium rather than Aloo-min-um. But then I say Grarse for Grass and Barth for Bath but my wife (from the grim place that is the North of England [I'm from the more appropriate South]) says them the latter way. I saw a stand up routine by a fellow from Oz and he said that in England you can tell what street you live on by your accent; he was right, too. ABE: how would you pronounce Slough? Edited by Larni, : Slough

how would you pronounce Slough? Depending on how the word is used either slau (noun) or sluf (verb) There is no better love between 2 people than mutual respect for each other WT Young, 2002 Who gave anyone the authority to call me an authority on anything. WT Young, 1969 Since Evolution is only ~90% correct it should be thrown out and replaced by Creation which has even a lower % of correctness. W T Young, 2008

Not long after I came over here, I worked in a small office where the manager would nip out pretty much every day to the local news agent's (something else foreign to me) and get snacks and drinks. He used to say to me,
"I'm goin' down the shop, you want ought?" (pronounced "oat") It took me a while to actually work out what that meant. I've also had to get used to being called a duck (pronounced "dook" to rhyme with "book"). Edited by Kitsune, : No reason given.

Larni writes: I saw a stand up routine Do you pronounce this with an intrusive r after "saw"? As a non-native speaker I have always liked the intrusive r very much. It sounds so very British.
