Sadly, women, for the most part, still aren't funny.
Here is a themed thread I've often thought about creating, but with Oni's remark above, I'd like to expand it to two items:
1. I think I agree. (Why don't more (any?) women do Curly Howard impressions? Seriously?)
My friends and I OFTEN talk about women and humor (lack of). I never dated a VERY funny girl, but I think I would like to.
Has there ever been any scientiifc research about women's apparent lack of humor?
My friends usually and ultimately semi-agree these women are funny: Carol Burnett, Phylis Diller, Gilda Radner, (maybe Lucille Ball?)
Forum participants, please name up to THREE of your favorite woman comedians.
2. I've often been told that the type of humor one likes GREATLY reveals the soul to one's personality. I think it would be interesting to line up our tastes in humor to our online personas. Please name up to FIVE of your favorite FUNNY movies. This is very difficult for me, I will be leaving off many I love, but maybe, in no particular order: Woody Allen's "Love and Death", Monty Pythons "Life of Brian" and "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World", Mel Brookes original "the Producers", Neal Simon's "Murder by Death"
Admn, obviously place this in coffeehouse forum.

I agree it generally seems to be true that women don't at least display a sense of humour as much as men, which makes it interesting that they often say that the thing they find most attractive in men is a sense of humour.
However, from my own observation I think that it's often the other way around. I think that they tend to laugh along with men they find physically attractive, even if they're not genuinely funny. (i.e. a good looking guy can say the worst or most crass joke and get a laugh).
I want to make it absolutely clear I'm not spiteful or jealous or anything.

Forum participants, please name up to THREE of your favorite woman comedians.
I don't have any favorite woman comedians...
I though Margaret Cho was funny. What I've seen of Ellen Degeneres's stand-up was funny.
Huh... they're both gay.
Please name up to FIVE of your favorite FUNNY movies.
I love Ace Ventura Pet Detective (Liar Liar, and Me Myself and Irene were great too)
All the Austin Powers movies had me rolling.
Will Ferrels movies make me laugh a lot too, Ancorman, Talidega Nights...
Kevin Smith's are great... Dogma, Clerks (good dialog)
Adam Sandler's too... Happy Gilmore etc.
Superbad (Knocked Up and the likes too)
Napoleon Dynamite made me laugh a lot.
Remember I'm Gonna Get You Sucka?... the Wayans brothers
Half Baked was hilarious.
I don't know how to pick just 5 from those
I think the stupider the better, for me.
I like the movies that have the lines that you can repeat/use in your day-to-day life.
But if I'm going for laughs, I'd much rather watch Stand-Up than a movie.

Wud up, Drone...
Has there ever been any scientiifc research about women's apparent lack of humor?
Actually, there is some if you'll agree with Hitchens:
Forum participants, please name up to THREE of your favorite woman comedians.
I personally know of a few female stand up comics that make me laugh, but if you listen to Hitchens he makes the point clear. The women I find funny are the one's who act or say things men would say.
1) Sarah Silverman is hilarious.
2) My girl, Andi Smith. Her and I have worked together many times before. She's also cute, has a nice ass and can smoke like a dude. Love her. She's toned down a bit in this clip but she is hardcore on stage.
3) Tina Fey is aight...
That's about it for me. The others I know that are kinda funny are not well known, but there aren't many. Keep an eye out for a chick called, Wendi Starling.
Please name up to FIVE of your favorite FUNNY movies.
1) Airplane
2) History of the World
3) Bananas
4) Pet Detective
5) Old School

I don't have any evidence that women lack a sense of humor. At most, I have evidence that they lack a sense of humor when in the presence of men. But they do seem able to giggle between themselves, as sometimes observed from a distance.
I do know some women who seem to be fine with humor. They are women who have a lot of self-confidence even in the presence of men.

Fat comics get lots of women... lots. It's confidence they seek.
In my experience, good looking nerdy comics who play up that shy guy shit strike out much more than over weight, or not that attractive, comics who are confident on stage and are cocky. Women LOVE cockyness and arrogance (not overly done though).
Oh, and some blow helps too.

Check out the Hitchens' video. That's exactly what he points out. Either gay, jewish or they act like men.
Btw, Cho is a cunt.
I love Ace Ventura Pet Detective (Liar Liar, and Me Myself and Irene were great too)

Niceee list. The only one's I don't like too much were Liar, Liar and Me, Myself and Irene. Carey was great in them but I don't think the films themselves were good.
And yes, I remember, I'm Gonna Get You Sucka...not many people got that movie. I thought it was hilarious!

This is my deal, too. If I can quote it, I love it.
I left out of my list, only because it was just 5, but I thought The Hangover was fucking hilarious. Zack steals that movie, and his stand up is brilliant, too.

I do have to often stifle a sigh when a stand up show wheels on a lady.
I know it's not PC but another round of gags about periods and not getting a guy?
Me not next.

I just watched that... Interesting.
Btw, Cho is a cunt.
I just saw her stand-up and we were laughing. I don't know anything about her, but I'll take your word for it. I was really digging deep to think of a female comic...
I totally forgot about Sarah Silverman... She's great.. and hot.
Niceee list.
I saw you put Pet Detective on there... god what a hilarious movie...
I got this buddy who everytime someone goes: how's it going? he replies:
"SUPER! and thanks for asking. I hope you're having a lovely day."
or there's:
"Do NOT go in there... Woo!"
The only one's I don't like too much were Liar, Liar and Me, Myself and Irene. Carey was great in them but I don't think the films themselves were good.
Ya know, the movies weren't that great... but Carey was! I'm with ya on that one.

Yup. When someone set you up just perfectly and then you get to fire off the quote and it fits right in and everyone laughs their ass off... that's so much fun.
I left out of my list, only because it was just 5, but I thought The Hangover was fucking hilarious. Zack steals that movie, and his stand up is brilliant, too.
I too like the Hangover and thought Zack stole it. I haven't looked into his stand-up but I will.
"Its a satchel... Indiana Jones wore one" Or when he's talking about his wolf pack I don't remember the lines...

Personally, I'd say that's evidence that women have a better sense of humor than men; I'm not a Stooges fan.
Forum participants, please name up to THREE of your favorite woman comedians.
I'd say mine are Brett Butler, Janene Garofalo and Rita Rudner. I'm not sure I've ever seen Garofalo do stand up, so if you're looking specifically for that, I'd add Paula Poundstone.
Roseanne was very entertaining at first, but she wore thin (ironically) before too long. I recognize that Lilly Tomlin is a tremendous talent, but she's not my cop of tea for the most part. I don't get Tracy Ullman at all.
Please name up to FIVE of your favorite FUNNY movies.
First three are easy, no question and uncontestably the three funniest movies ever made. In no particular order:
Airplane
What's Up Doc?
Being There
If I had to go to five, I'd probably add Dogma and Ruthless People

Thing that always bothers me about this sort of argument, is how can we agree that men are funnier than women when we don't agree what's funny. Most of the films listed so far I thought were awful. I've never heard of any of the female comics mentioned except Ellen Degeneres, who isn't very funny. I watched the Andi Smith posted by onifre, and didn't find it at all funny.
Without any clear agreement on what funny is, how can we agree who's best at it?

Or when he's talking about his wolf pack I don't remember the lines...
Just because I loved that part:
quote:
Hello. How 'bout that ride in? I guess that's why they call it Sin City. [awkward laugh] You guys might not know this, but I consider myself a bit of a loner. I tend to think of myself as a one-man wolf pack. But when my sister brought Doug home, I knew he was one of my own. And my wolf pack... it grew by one. So there... there were two of us in the wolf pack... I was alone first in the pack, and then Doug joined in later. And six months ago, when Doug introduced me to you guys, I thought, "Wait a second, could it be?" And now I know for sure, I just added two more guys to my wolf pack. Four of us wolves, running around the desert together, in Las Vegas, looking for strippers and cocaine. So tonight, I make a toast!
Pleaseeeee tell me you've seen Zacks webisodes, Between Two Ferns? If not, my 2 fav's, althought there are about 6 of them:
Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis: Michael Cera
Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis: Bradley Cooper
(Note the conditions of the ferns in the two videos )
