Author | Topic: UFO's or Demons | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Every once in a while I check out various creationist or 'christian' blogs and forums to catch and follow trends or memes in those corners of the intertubes. Out of the many fascinating memes and emerging memes was a recent re-post of an article by 'olivetree' ministries(?) on the connection between UFO's and Demons over at the Fresh-Hope Christian forum. What was particularily fascinating to me was the intersection of 'science fiction' and Christian Dogma, specifically the co-option of UFO's into Demon manifestations. This and the fact that the validity of UFO sightings was not really in disute, but rather that, like one poster who stated their opinion had always been that, '...people who claim they've seen aliens from outer space were nothing but a bunch of nut jobs.'
There are so many interesting aspects to this kind of thought process that I had to see what others thought about this (new to me) idea that has come up within one christian blog and a christian ministery.

I knew a fellow almost thirty years ago who believed that UFOs were demons. Otherwise, he was a pretty sensible guy.

When I looked at the site you linked all saw was the classic Christian Cult of Ignorance practice of looking to SOURCE instead of content.
Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

'...people who claim they've seen aliens from outer space were nothing but a bunch of nut jobs.' Yes. It's demons, not those impossible aliens. "Physician, heal thyself" sort of springs to mind, doesn't it...... Your characterization of this as a "thought process" is, uh, generous, though.

It comes from their obsession with supernatural spirits. This is not just a rank and file thingie. They are getting the idea from their pastors, from Christian radio, and from other similar sources.

I would be flabergasted to actually meet someone who believes UFO's are Demons. I think its amazing that the issue isn't whether or not ufo's are 'real' but rather that they are actually demons come for whatever nefarious reasons. It seems doubly credulous to me.

Do you think they are worried about demon manifestations (i.e. The demons are come to bring pain and hellfire)? or do you think they look at these demons in the classical sense, of paranormal creatures of unknowable intent?

I was trying to be generous, yes. Especially because it is seems to be such outlandishly archaic or dark ages-like thinking that I can't tell if they're joking about it, exploring the possiblilty, or actually holding it as a self-evident truth.

It really sounds to me like a serious throw-back to the days when people believed demons were all around and would visit them at night (e.g. Sucubus or incubus ideas).
I would really be interested in watching to see how far this meme travels, much like the belief that hurricanes and tornadoes are supernatural punishments for transgretions.

I don't think they think or even know how to think.

It's been a while since I last tuned in to Christian radio. I sure got the impression that they do believe there are demons everywhere. I guess it is part of that magical thinking.

I am also guilty in magically thinking. I thought that I could coax some resident creationist into a discussion on whether or not this idea from the website is way out of the christian mainstream.
Of course it hasn't been up very long, so I probably just need to be more patient.

*shrug* I would be flabergasted to actually meet someone who believes UFO's are Demons. Almost everybody I know believes in demons. A few believe in UFOs too but I don't know of any others who make the connection. Personally, I find it odd that somebody can whole-heartedly believe in one superstition and yet laugh off another equally implausible one. I'd be more comfortable if they consistently believed in everything or nothing. Edited by Ringo, : Fixed missspllinge. Life is like a Hot Wheels car.
