Hello everyone! (:. I'm new to this site, and I always like to give a formal introduction post when I "join" a forum.
Just a few details:
I'm 18(19 at the end of July), currently attending college in Florida as a physics major, and an Agnostic. I was Christian for the majority of my life, but a few years back (about 2 and a half now) I simply dropped the belief. The story behind that is not for this thread, but I'd be happy to start it up in another thread if anyone would like.
I came upon this site when searching the web for Agnosticism in general. For the past couple of days I have been reading various threads, and have found that there are some very intelligent people here. Those of you who seem to be regular posters here seem very polite and skillful in your debating technique. This is definitely something I am interested in, as it's hard to have educated discussions like this in real life sometimes.
Anyways, I just wanted to say hello, and hopefully I will be around to post and read other posts for a while. (:
P.S.: I am very interested in exploring the peculiarities of the various topics that come up here. If anyone knows of some good books about the history of religion, science, mankind, etc. could you please name them for me? I would very much like to begin an in-depth research into the issue of faith and science.
Thanks ahead of time for any and all replies!

Thanks for all the recommendations. I'll certainly look into them (: .
And yes, it is pretty down here in Fl. Seems we never get credit for our own existence, though, lol. It's always either southern Alabama, southern Georgia, or northern Cuba, it seems . Ah well...no big deal.

a newbie like me!
i am also new, i am interested in the whole evc question. i am 20 and have been raised in many faiths but never really felt "in" with any of them. (born catholic,raised mormon, dad went christian when he married the stepmom)now, i am not really well informed, yet. and i would like to be, but after reading a few topic threads already i can see that this is gonna be a deep pool to jump into.

I agree completely. Some of these guys/gals are very quick to point out errors in pretty much anything. While I can see where some would feel intimidated by this, I definitely find it to be a very good thing. It encourages solid debates and the pursuit of knowledge, to say the least (: .
It's amazing how much some of them seem to know, I must say. That is one of the main reasons I want to read up on some things. I would hate to participate in a debate without the facts, though I can see that many here do, in fact, do just that.
At any rate, I hope you find what you are looking for here. Maybe I'll see you around.

If you're worried about people pointing out your errors, it's much better to ask question than to make statements. We're a lot easier on folks who want to learn than we are on folks who want to spout off nonsense.
Ask questions, guys. We love to answer questions.

virgin question
ok...sounds good, question numero uno is that i have seen people make a distinction between "evolution" and "natural selection" i am not sure what the difference is. could anyone shed some light on this?

Re: virgin question
The whole being jumped on is just as scary after youve been here a while
So im gonna risk answering this. Natural selection is the process of the environment selecting for the most well adapted individuals in a population. These individuals will in theory breed more (produce more offspring) than less well adapted individuals.
The theory of evolution states that it is due to mutation that these differences between individuals occur through random mutation, and then it is these mutation that natural selection acts upon.
Evolution = Random mutation + natural selecion = a shift in allele frequencies within a population

Re: virgin question
Unseul = gene pool.
mechanisms = Christians
preach = provide
Gospel = alleles
Evolution is the change in the gene pool, by means of natural selection acting upon that other mechanism of mutation. Evolution is caused by natural selection. The actual evolution is the change in the gene pool. ROFL. However, if a change in the Unseul is caused by the two christians who preach the Gospel, will that mean evolution is also a similar process to faith.

Re: virgin question
No, it will mean changing faith is a similar process to evolution. Remember mike evolution is the more true of the two examples, and therefore deserves to take the primary position
Why two christians? As far as i am concerned the only selection pressures caused to my faith are me its how i lost it, and if i ever get it back i suspect that will be how, and i seriously doubt gospels will be any sort of change, if i have faith it will be of my own concoction.

Mutation + natural selection. Silly baba.

But I thought natural selection is a culling process? How can you regain it? Except the other christian(mutation)- randomly preaches to you, while the other one acts upon that random sermon. ROFL

Re: virgin question
Well i've had a housemate preaching random sermons, well ones from leviticus, its hilarious. Thou shall not uncover the nakedness of thou sister. The one that got said to me was that i shall not have two different weights in my bag, one large and one small. Oh yeah, and apparently if lotsa people sin they must sacrifice a bull, if its just a single common man then a goat is sufficient, although its guts must be removed and any fat as well ( i think). Some of the rules are hilarious. I realise that your a NT man, so dont expect you to start checking your bag for weights, or uncover your sisters nakedness....
Once again you seemed to have succesfully guided the conversation away from the topic at hand, you're a bad influence mike.
