So we are seeing an unusual increase in activity in Sumatra, currently 20+ Volcanoes showing high activity, several pretty large earthquakes showing major repositioning events. There are records from the past that show pretty major events in that area, Toba comes to mind. Is there any possibility or likelihood of a similar event? and no idea where this should go. Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

I guess the Republicans must be campaigning there, too. Jesus was a liberal hippie

As this develops I wonder what additional insights into the workings of the planet itself will be gained? Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

nah for all of us to die there would haveto be a super volcano like the one under Yellowstone, and it is not like that the ground rose 7cm there in the past 10 years so there is nothing to worry abbout o wait the ground did rise there are tons of things that can blow up in our face any minute i doubt it will happen on 21.12.2012 thou.

The question is "What is it likely we might learn from what is currently happening in Sumatra?" Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

Krakatoa comes to mind. In 1883 all three volcanoes in that system exploded quite spectacularly, much more violently than even Mt. St. Helens. I was watching the documentary on the 1883 eruption just last night. If I remember correctly, they had pretty strong evidence of an even bigger eruption from the same system just a century or two before the 1883 eruption. I would say that there is much to be concerned about regarding the Sumatran volcanoes.

Could well be, but I'm more interested in what we might learn from this event. Seeing 20+ volcanoes show almost synchronized increases in activity during the same period when we are seeing pretty significant redistribution of the plates should offer us some increased information on the dynamics of the system. I'm sure there is work going on to look at the plumbing beneath the volcanoes and to ferret out connections between those magma sources and the subduction down below that is driving the quakes. But my suspicion (IANAG) is that below the volcanoes may be molten enough that plates slide smoothly there - the big quakes are shallower and seaward/trenchward, I think, where brittle failure of the rock is more possible. http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/en/indonesia/sumatra.html sort of supports my suspicion.

The Volcanoes are pretty clearly the result of molten material, but the shallower slips that cause the earthquakes are also likely indicators of the conveyor belt delivering material to the molten areas. Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!
