I favor censorship.
Mark Twain writes:
Once I talked to the inmates of an insane asylum in Hartford. I have talked to idiots a thousand times, but only once to the insane...
Mark Twain writes:
In the first place God made idiots. This was for practice. Then he made School Boards.
Mark Twain writes:
We are all erring creatures, and mainly idiots, but God made us so and it is dangerous to criticise.
Mark Twain writes:
His ignorance covered the whole earth like a blanket, and there was hardly a hole in it anywhere.
Mark Twain writes:
...ignorant as the unborne babe! ignorant as unborn twins!
Mark Twain writes:
[He] was endowed with a stupidity which by the least little stretch would go around the globe four times and tie.
Mark Twain writes:
...there are some things that can beat smartness and foresight. Awkwardness and stupidity can. The best swordsman in the world doesn't need to fear the second best swordsman in the world; no, the person for him to be afraid of is some ignorant antagonist who has never had a sword in his hand before; he doesn't do the thing he ought to do, and so the expert isn't prepared for him.
Those that handle language well and precisely must be handicapped in order that those who are incapable of either can feel good about themselves.

Jar's in particular. I mean I cannot even read his quotes without using the 'peek' feature.
All ethics and philosophy aside, I just find it annoying. It certainly makes 'understanding through discussion' a lot more difficult.

Yeah, I know, I feel the same way, so I'm sort of torn in two directions because I do need an economical way to put some moderation pressure on those who are a little bit too free with their appellations. I hoped that assigning censored words on single individuals would usually be a temporary measure, but Jar and I had a conversation, and we were not able to find common ground.

Censoring Insensibility
Those that handle language well and precisely would find a way to have it so that even asterisks wouldn't show up in their posts.
People don't need to be constantly reminded that their views and beliefs are "ignorant" or "stupid". They need to know why, and/or be shown other, perhaps more descriptive vocabulary as to their limitations. Perhaps some of us need to have it explained why our culture is not up to snuff, or why we will fail.

So what's the point of it, if it's not applying any pressure?
You tried it, it didn't work. Isn't it the time to stop?

Yet you cannot find a single instance when I have ever called a member ignorant or stupid or even an idiot.
I try very hard to attack the idea and topic, not the person.

The goal was to provide an economical way to enforce rule 10. It's working fine.
My hope was that it would not need to be permanent for any individual because seeing asterisks would be an effective deterrent. For some individuals this hope proved out, for others not.

Re: Censoring Insensibility
Ah, so in the post to which you are replying you might notice I used none of those words.
Are you perhaps saying that I have not explained over and over why an idea might fall into such categories?
If someone persists in posting material that falls into those categories should it not be pointed out?
Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with the level of censorship at EvC and I can expand my vocabulary to work around the restrictions, but that would simply make more work for Percy and I do not want to cause him even more problems.

If Christ were here there is one thing he would not be--a Christian.
Mark Twain writes:
One can deliver a satire with telling force through the insidious medium of a travesty, if he is careful not to overwhelm the satire with the extraneous interest of the travesty.
