Just a thought...maybe do away with member ratings and rate messages only. Doing that could allow for an automatic post of the month, we could still have a members choice also for post of the month.
As far as how to rate them I would do a +/-, a good post might be a +7, a bad one might be a -7.
ABE... I would also consider having the votes anonymous, I feel people are less likely to vote down someone who they usually agree with.

I have suggested a number of times having three ratings:
--Post of the Day
--Post of the Week
--Post of the Month
This is a system with no negatives, and which could have automatic moving to the Post of the Month thread when sufficient positives are accumulated.

I am not sure if I would do a daily thing, but weekly might be good.

Voting option
How about being able to vote on a Post of the month with a + or -....Just a thought.

The Dorian Gray Option
Instead of Cheers/Jeers, we could have Pax/Pox.
With each Pax, the poster's avatar would get shinier and shinier via an excruciatingly exact backlit effect. This would be the clear light of nature.
With each Pox, the poster's avatar would get more diseased--tiny red pixels of pustulating pox.
At the end of the month, the poster with the shiniest avatar would win...something: Transcendence, perhaps.
The poster with the most diseased-looking avatar would be banned, and good riddance to another pox-addled poster.

Damn!
I might have to turn off loading images, if that happens.
