It can be easy to be pessimistic about the future of humanity, but occasionally, something gives you hope:
The Indian sanitary pad revolutionary - BBC News
In particular, the way the guy seems to have eschewed the sort of wealth he could fairly easily have got.
May more people like Muruganantham succeed.
(And if anyone has information that any parts of the story are incorrect, please keep it to yourself for a while, so that I can stay warm and fuzzy feeling for a bit !)

Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

WOW
Very inspirational.
I have thought for a few years now that some sort of microloan program in underdeveloped countries like India are a way to combat the crushing poverty. Innovations like this do the same thing.
Microloan programs may even be very helpful in the developed world too. Instead around here people are taken advantage of by payday lenders.

Facts don't lie or have an agenda. Facts are just facts
"God did it" is not an argument. It is an excuse for intellectual laziness.

Re: WOW
Absolutely right. What struck me in particular about this story was the awareness and anticipation that the chap had, as a result of his membership of that community. He knew to keep the machine open and easy for the users to maintain - he was familiar with, and very respectful of the community's sensitivities to the issues. Microloans have the same advantage - they facilitate solutions that can actually work, because the people they're helping, actually come up with them.

Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?
