The blood moon effect, or lunar eclipse, is causing a stir in religious circles:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/...ee7-02c1e10a03f0_story.html
I guess the Rapture crowd is now gleefully awaiting the arrival of Super-Jesus, who will finally reward them for their faith as he systematically wipes out anyone else, including those born into the wrong religion.
I do give props to this one pastor, who stated the following:
quote:
Greg Boyd, a pastor of Woodland Hills Church in St. Paul, Minn., called the predictions a waste of time, maybe even bordering on astrology.
You have an entire population buying into this stuff so no congregation is immune to this, Boyd said. It can strike fear into people, which is so unnecessary and wrong.
Anyone have any guesses what century it will be before we finally cast off the vestiges of our less enlightened past and admit that celestial events like these are nothing more than a neat light show?

The first amendment "free exercise" clause grants Americans a constitutional right to believe ridiculous nonsense.

Not for a very long time. Humans are a very superstitious bunch, and prone to ignoring reason in favor of belonging to a group. It seems to be part of our basic makeup.
The Heaven's Gate cult came and went not that long ago. That was completely home grown, and had no ties to traditional religions. It's not as if the traditional religions are keeping this type of crazy alive. It is still there just waiting for an outlet.

But Pastor John Hagee speaks with such conviction it must be true.

Christianity, One woman's lie about an affair that got seriously out of hand
What are the Christians gonna do to me ..... Forgive me, good luck with that.

John Hagee was the main pastor referenced in that article regarding the end times coming. For the record, he is either a very skilled scam artist or a complete and utter loon. Or perhaps a bit of both.

Either way, the Hagee phenomenon is pretty funny. This dude is wrong time after time, but it scarcely matters to his followers.
Apparently, the current lack of spectacular comets means that these liars have to latch onto other ordinary, and totally predictable phenomenon in order to predict gloom and doom.
Wasn't this stuff covered adequately in episode 3 or 4 of 'Cosmos'. Sheesh.

That is truly the sad part. In any other profession: engineering, medicine, etc. a track record like that will get you tossed out of your field and maybe even land you in jail. But when it comes to religion, they get a free pass.

Yet they still try to find nonsense in perfectly logical phenomenon. Look at astrology. There are still idiots who believe that nonsense despite the fact that we have fully understood the constellations and star movements for a few centuries now!

Lunar eclipse Sunday night
Yeah, I know this thread is a year and a half old, but there is another one of those supermoon, blood moon eclipse things happening this Sunday evening. About half of the earth will be a good place to view the eclipse, including US, Canada, and Central and South America.

Yeah, I saw that in a few places on the web. I'm kinda embarrassed at missing out on these Rapture End-Of-The-World things happening all around me and I don't get to see all the dead people, the flying people, the monsters and Scott's Orbs floating around everywhere. I keep forgetting it's supposed to happen and by the time I remember it's all over.
I'll be watching football all day Sunday and I just know I'm going to forget again.
Could some of you folks do me a kindness?
When it all starts and everyone is dyin and flyin in the haze of monsters and orbs could some of you please leave a message here that it's going on and really happening? I plan to check in here frequently, like on every score and every timeout, so I'll know when this one is in swing. I really want to experience one of them End-Of-The-Worlds before I get too much older here and can't hear or see all that well anymore
Thanks in advance, Guys. I really appreciate it.

Blood Moon 2014
This is one of my shots from the lunar eclipse on October 8, 2014. Shot at 04:04, so right at the tail end of totality (you can see brightening on the upper right). Shot with a 500mm f4.5 0.8seconds. I used this crop because my exposure also captured 3 other objects, probably stars.
If it is clear here tomorrow night I will try and shoot it again. I am also going to get my telescope out try some shots with it.

There's nothing wrong with seeing more in a lunar eclipse than a 'neat light show'.
You may think finding meaning in otherwise spiritless and mechanical processes is a 'vestige of our less enlightened past', but I think it's what makes us human and our lives worth living.

Love your enemies!

Spirit Be Damned.
The problem is that this meaning from our less enlightened past could mean other humans had their lives made more miserable and too early ended. That is what is wrong with seeing a spiritless and mechanical process as something more than it actually is. It is human, yes, but it is also barbaric and evil. The only response to such meanings is stiff opposition to the point of ridicule.
