Republican Convention
Almost as if we collectively are living in a reality TV show, the media presented us with coverage of the Republican Convention. I watched snippets of it, but rarely do I watch anything for long since I regard television as little more than chewing gum for the mind. (Even Christian TV! )
I DID read a good article on CNN titled What's fueling the Republican fury. First off, I'll note that it is in the opinion section of the CNN website, written by Peniel Joseph. The summation of the article is basically this:
quote:
Over the course of the week, speaker after speaker framed the upcoming presidential contest as nothing less than a civilizational clash between God-fearing, law-abiding, and Constitution-loving white Americans and radical black protesters, illegal Latino criminals and Muslim terrorists.
The article suggests that the old political strategy of playing to the fears of people usually brings out the vote.
I think that it basically boils down to the old guard (and the many wannabe rich people behind them) are afraid of losing money and power. To me, Donald Trump is similar to Adolph Hitler in the 1920s rising to power because of the fear in germany of going broke and losing the status of their past glory days.

Democratic Convention can also be discussed here
Atlantic writes:
In a press release Friday, the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Convention Committee announced which bold-faced names would speak when during the four-night event. The festivities begin July 25 in Philadelphia, and as is traditional, the candidate herself isn’t speaking until the last night.
The speaker wont be there. Whassername?
The first night’s theme is a bit on-the-nose: They’re calling it United Together, and it’ll feature appearances from First Lady Michelle Obama, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, and immigration activist Astrid Silva, whose story President Obama once highlighted in an address on immigration. The Clinton team is counting on Sanders, who only recently endorsed her, to rally his legions of supporters to her campaign, and clearly they hope he’ll be able to do that effectively at the top of the convention’s proceedings.
Comments?

I don't know what to make of your statement, Phat.
It would be very surprising if the House Speaker showed up to the Democratic Party convention, what with Paul Ryan being a Republican.
Nancy Pelosi is not the House Speaker. She is the minority leader. She was present at the convention breakfast at which she received a substantial amount of booing.

Re: Democratic Convention can also be discussed here
After a tumultuous two days, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Weston sought Monday to refocus the political spotlight on Hillary Clinton and away from herself by relinquishing Democratic National Convention gavel.
This lady.

Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Weston
Okay. How could we have recognized her from the term "speaker"?

I assumed "gavel" meant that she was speaker...didnt really think---but enough about me! What did you think of the Republican Convention?

What did you think of the Republican Convention?
Overall, the convention had some interesting moments. I would have to consider the convention a non-event in terms of putting wind under Trump's sails. Perhaps it will result in flushing what some here have called the unflushable, namely Ted Cruz. If so, that would be the highlight.

When Phat said "Whassername?" I immediately thought "Wasserman" - though I have no idea who Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz is.

Re: Democratic Convention can also be discussed here
She is the partisan head of the DNC that favored Hillary (she has been from Florida as a congresscritter since around 2002 or so). She was not is. She was forced to resign just days ago after the wikileaks bombshell.
She caused many to protest including some prominent Democratic rising stars
The Hindu congresswoman (from Hawaii), who endorsed Sanders, resigned her DNC post several months ago to protest Wasserman Schultz and her pro-Hillary crap. Telsa was her name or something.
Sanders won the diverse state of Hawaii by about 70% to 30% (Alaska 82% to 18%), and its congresswoman resigned from the DNC.before the primary

The Old Guard aka White Privilege
I think that it basically boils down to the old guard are afraid of losing money and power.
catsci writes:

On the contrary,... the W.A.S.P and Jewish (and secular) White Guys (in general) who are from families of privilege that control hundreds of millions of dollars are made safer by the next class beneath them taking the bullet. These people are also by and large the same religious/ethnic and secular makeup who don't embrace Democratic policies.
At the risk of sounding stereotypical, I maintain that the "white privilege" moniker is a handy buzzword...wealthy people include people of color these days. The key attribute of being a member of the "old guard" is money and power and being in alliance with others of money and power.
For the life of me, though...I don't see how Trump as a figurehead will protect their financial interests.
Does anyone have any statistics as to what percentage of the top 20% vote republican?

A rising star?
I just looked into this congresswoman.
She could be a future star. Very anti-war.
quote:
"As a veteran, as a soldier, I've seen firsthand the true cost of war. As we look at our choices as to who our next Commander-in-chief will be is to recognize the necessity to have a Commander-in-chief who has foresight. Who exercises good judgment. Who looks beyond the consequences -- who looks at the consequences of the actions that they are willing to take before they take those actions. So that we don't continue to find ourselves in these failures that have resulted in chaos in the Middle East and so much loss of life," Gabbard said.
http://www.nbcnews.com/...nie-sanders-steps-down-dnc-n527481
Look at this new article. It is highly critical.
She seems to have views that represent the people. She seems to care about good policy and telling the truth.
quote:
The Bernie-Endorsing Congresswoman Who Trump Fans Can Love
Tulsi Gabbard is a Bernie supporter and a progressive darlingand yet her stances on standard liberal issues like gun rights and immigration are starting to converge with those of Donald J. Trump.
....
Trump’s views on foreign policy have overthrown a generation’s worth of conservative thinking on the matter: His tolerant stance on dictators like Bashar al-Assad and Vladimir Putin shocked much of the right’s national security intelligencia. But it meshed well with Gabbard’s thinking.
In March, Gabbard was the only Democrat and one of just three members of Congress to vote against a resolution condemning violence by the Assad regime against civilian populations.
Bad enough US has not been bombing al-Qaeda/al-Nusra in Syria. But it’s mind-boggling that we protest Russia’s bombing of these terrorists, Gabbard wrote in September, on the first day of the Russian intervention in Syria.
Firstly, Gabbard is wrong that the U.S. has not struck al Nusra in Syriait hasand secondly, her position aligns nicely with Trump’s: He called those strikes a positive thing. Russia is responsible for attacking U.S. backed opposition forces in Syria.
Tulsi Gabbard: The Bernie-Endorsing Congresswoman Who Trump Fans Can Love
She seems to be somebody who speaks the truth.
Hillary was just chosen by that fraudulent "Democratic" Convention minutes ago.
It is a sad day.
Hopefully there are brighter things ahead.
Could this young congresswomen be an example?

Re: A rising star? To phat.
See my post #1590 in this thread.
EvC Forum: Oh No, The New Awesome Primary Thread
I have a link which shows the actual DNC quotes that were hacked.
One example is a DNC official attempting to use Sanders religion to hurt him among "southern" voters. It was essentially trying to alert blacks that Sanders was an anti-Christian Jew by raising the religion issue. The raisng of Sanders ethnicity would just kill him among blacks.
The larger issue is the Russian war/peace issues.
These recent developments were a confirmation of my earlier prediction in post #1586.
Both can be found in my link above.
