Henry Gee disputes Intelligent Design using the
immune system of the lamprey as an example in:
The Tyranny of Design
by Henry Gee, 07 July 2004, Nature News & Comment
The tyranny of design | Nature
doi:10.1038/news040705-1
"How could sophisticated mechanisms such as the
flagellar motor or the adaptive immune system
have evolved without some guiding hand? Henry
Gee finds Design in the lamprey."
The article being discussed is:
ZEEV PANCER, CHRIS T. AMEMIYA, GTZ R. A. EHRHARDT,
JILL CEITLIN, G. LARRY GARTLAND, and MAX D. COOPER,
2004, Somatic diversification of variable lymphocyte
receptors in the agnathan sea lamprey. Nature 430,

Best Regards;

I was discussing the problem with two polymathic friends of mine, reproductive biologist Jack Cohen and mathematician Ian Stewart, co-authors of Figments of Reality, Evolving the Alien and The Science of Discworld. They are working on their next book, Appearance of Design (to be published by Penguin next year)
This is good news. We can expect a readable popular-level answer to Intelligent Design published by a major mass-market publisher.
Sadly the ID propaganda machine will probably try to use it as evidence that they are succeeding, but on the whole it offers the hope of a source we can expect people who are actually interested in the issues to be able to easily obtain and read.
