Greetings,
Are energy and matter the same thing? It seems a few people think matter has a capacity to do work and some don't. I propose that energy when bound together forms bonds that eventually build up to form matter. However, matter certainly does not have a capacity to do work unless the bonds are broken. This breaking of the bonds requires outside energy so therefor matter has no capacity to do work. To me energy is essentially, metaphorically speaking and perhaps literally as well, just momentum. Am I right or wrong? I hope to see cavediver, catholic scientist, devilsadvocate, modulus, buzsaw, percy, paulk and mark24 involved here.
p.s. I propose this topic because it seems we keep going off topic here. EvC Forum: How did round planets form from the explosion of the Big Bang?

I think this discussion is already taking place at Where did the matter and energy come from?. Please take a look and let me know if it fits the bill.

Admin,
that thread is more talking about where everything came from. This thread I want to discuss the fundamental differences between matter and enegy.

Hi Sasuke,
There are many posts discussing precisely what you're interested in discussing, namely "the fundamental differences between matter and energy." For example, see Message 15 and some of the following discussion, and later in the thread Message 80 and some of the following discussion.

Percy,
couldn't we just open a discussion on it and see where it goes.. Is it really going to cause an issue?

Hi Sasuke,
I have a reason for not promoting this thread, namely that the topic is already under active discussion over at Where did the matter and energy come from?. You do not, since you only offer this:

Admin,
the discussion of the differences of matter and energy is clearly off topic there but it is clearly ontopic here. So why not?
