From time to time a member will ask about instant messaging and/or chat rooms. This board has neither feature. Have members encountered these features on other boards? Have they proved useful?

I've seen them. They work best when there's a scheduled time for a chat, (and the chat room is closed at other times) instead of just a general lounge/conversation area.

Yes, it works. Like Dan said, it works best if there is a schedule for chat, like every monday night or every tuesday night. However, if you leave the chat room open 24/7, there will always be people there to talk to just in case you are a college student and you are bored to death from studying Shakespear or something.
