This week I walked into a classrom and found one of my students playing a Ramones cd on the computer. She apologized and stopped it. I told her that I didn't mind at all, in fact I had seen the Ramones play live way back when. This started a conversation in which I realized that I was freakin' old. When did that happen?
I saw the Dead Kennedys, Crucifux, DOA, Black Flag, Fear, Agent Orange, Social Distortion (before they turned to the dark side), and countless others.
I was there when slam dancing turned into moshing. When decent punk bands turned into speed metal sell-outs. Around 1987 punks stopped going to punk shows (at least in Seattle) because the scene stopped being fun. The politcal aspect was long gone. People were being hurt at shows, the music sucked, and the crowd had completely changed. What I love is that 20 years later we were right! Reagan was a bastard when he wasn't asleep. Vindication!
So I would like to know other old punk experiences. This seems like a good coffee house topic.

I used to wear a punk "reagan hates me" t-shirt. I can't remember now, but I think I wore it to a Jello Biafra speech on politics (if I remember right the DKs had recently broken up). Ah, back when youth could still enjoy sex and rebellion without guilt.

Ditto what Jar said. I did see Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen once, though.

How about "Led Zeppelin", CCR and the beach boys?

Didja ever run into John Norman? He was there, too. You know, the long-haired skinny acidhead...
Oh, so were all the other guys there....

not hippy, not punk (so off topic?)
Molly Hatchett, April Wine, Rush, Triumph, Scorpions, BOC.
Rocklahoma with Pat Benatar, Sammy Hagar, Van Halen, and the Doobie Brothers (unfortunately, with Michael McDonald).
Triumph put on the best show of those that I saw. Ric Emmett was able to mix up some hard rock with some quiet acoustic stuff--made for a great show. Best pyrotechics as well.
My regrets: I didn't see Jethro Tull at their height (Songs from the Wood tour would have been cool); but much worse, I never saw Stevie Ray Vaughan play.
Cheers.

My 13 year old son likes the Ramones; I explained the best way that I could what it was to be a punk back when it all began, and that it had nothing to do with the hair and clothes. That came later as a means to identify them; the punk scene was quite political and aware of what was happening at the time.
The stuff that's out now labeled as punk, is just a way for bands to make more money playing music that sounds (in a small way) like the old punk. But the point is lost; the Sex Pistols were terrible musicians and the only thing they had going for them was the shock that they invoked.
After others started inmitating them, the shock wore off rather quickly.
When Avril Levine (sp?) had her 15 minutes, I almost through my guitar through the TV when they announced her as being 'punk'.
WTF

Just a plug for a Rhino Records punk compilation
A nice 4 cd cross section, minus any Sex Pistols (who would not licence any tunes to Rhino).
No Thanks! The 70's Punk Rebellion

40
Hehe, good one. I'll tell you when I first felt old.
I was playing basketball with some guys who were all around 21. I had told them I was 37 (this was 3 years ago). At the end of the 3vs3, the yougest healthiest guy challenged me to a 1 one 1. When the game was nearing the end, and I was kicking his ass, his freinds yell out to him, "Hey, are you going to let that guy beat you, he's almost 40!!"
My head swung around a few times, as if I was looking for someone else who could be "almost 40" then the sad realization hit me hard, I'm almost 40, crap. At least I won the game.
The other times I feel old, is like when you bring up old TV shows. I got a kid now who is 22 working for me, and I started to do the sound effect from the bionic man, as we were lifting something very heavy, and he just didn't get it. When I started to explain it to him, I realized he probably wasn't even born yet when that was out.

I was in the 90's punk sceen. It was one of the better experiences of my life. We still liked the classics like the Ramons, DK's, and Social D. but we were into the new breed of stuff coming from so. cal.
Operation Ivy, NOFX, Propaghandhi, Rancid, etc.
It was pretty awsome. Tho Emo seems to dominate the current 'punk' norm. There is still real punk in dingy clubs with no name bands railing against the system

You ever see that interview with Avril Lavigne, where she says how influenced she is by punk, and the interviewer asks her what she thinks of the Sex Pistols?
She responds, "Who?"
Sigh.
Of course, this is also the woman who, at an awards show, introduced the next speaker as David Bow-ee.
