One Laptop Per Child? | Open Source with Christopher Lydon
on now, about half over, but you can read up.
quote:
The number, one billion, is so staggering it’s hard to wrap your head around. But that’s how many school-age kids there are in the world, and the number of laptops the One Laptop Per Child project wants to eventually distribute to live up to its name. Think of it as No Child ” from the rich north to the poor south ” Left Behind the Digital Revolution.
But the basic idea hasn’t changed: create a rugged, efficient, powerful but intuitive laptop and get education ministries around the world to buy it for their young people in large numbers. (No order below one million laptops will be accepted.) This is “an education project, not a laptop project,” Negroponte is fond of saying.
Changing the way education is done, around the world.
I'm for it, I'l like one and would be willing to pay double so that a second would be donated for education.
Enjoy.

my biggest concern is... laptops are great. electricity and clean, running water is better.

I think it's a poor project. Why not make the same kind of project for food or water? Although, the World food program kind of is like that I guess...

I agree with you...or I did when I first read about this project a few months back.
I got to thinking, tho and I imagined these kids having access to this wonderful medium and the tools that would allow them to not only tell their stories and hopefully get support for their other immediate needs, but would to also find out about a world beyond their own and be able to apply their knowledge to make their ow lives better.
I imagined a teacher in Africa using information from the internet to teach her kids about HIV. I imagined kids learning about ways to keep the water clean or coming together with other kids from around the world to push for water conservation or money for cleaner water in their areas.
I imagined more people getting word out about their projects to organizations like KIVA or to private individuals. I imagined teachers without money for textbooks being able to use online texts and other informational websites to teach their kids.
Many, if not all, of the problems that face these kids right now can be alleviated with education and access to computers and the internet is a powerful educational tool.
Its kinda like that saying "Give a man a fish and he can feed his family for a day. Teach a man to fish and he can feed his family for life."
That is not to say that other projects that feed or clothe or provide fresh drinking water should be halted. Not at all.
Just that education is the key to eliminating the need for such programs in the future.

So areas with some electricity and clean enough running water should wait until the every area has it (as the population bulges)?
Or should they be empowered to take the next step? Have you seen how cell phones have changed 3rd world farming?

did i say that?
You didn't exclude it.
What we have done so far, is establish that there are conditions where basic survival needs do not need to be considered in the question of whether $100 computers are a good idea.
Now perhaps we can address the issue of whether $100 computers are a good idea.
Enjoy.

Make that $175 ...
Still a bargain for an entry level computer to open minds to the vista of knowledge.
PC World Article - XO Laptop: Child's Play
quote:
OLPC replies to that criticism by pointing out that the XO is not designed for modern office use, but for three universal traits that every kid has in common: learning, socializing and creating, Bender said.
That is why the XO's desktop page shows a graphic map of WiFi signals up to 2 kilometers away, allowing all the XO laptops in a village to share drawings, notes, photographs, and musical compositions. The mesh of laptops could also share a single Internet connection, allowing them to use a distant ISP or a single schoolhouse server.
Direct peer to peer networking without going through an ISP? Next let each one act as a hub to transmit to others in it's range - the cell phone approach to world wide connections without the towers?
Sounds like a communist type idea eh?
Enjoy.

I am wondering about what a kid that can`t read or write and works hard every day in order to have a meal will do with a laptop. Sell it on e-bay, may be?

A Little Bit More

Pardon my response to an old post.
Here in West Texas, when I go to change oil in my car what is on their waiting room TV, Faux News. When I go to the bank, what is on their LCD in the lobby, Faux News.
One effect of providing laptops to everyone on earth is so they have an alternative to Murdoch's (Goebbels?) Faux News. It's more freedom than I have, at least when it comes to a public area.

Give one Get one (G1G1)
The new laptops will be available shortly. Cost is still not down to $100, but it is still a good deal.
BBC NEWS | Technology | '$100 laptop' to sell to public
quote:
The organisation behind the project has launched the "give one, get one" scheme that will allow US residents to purchase two laptops for $399 (198).
One laptop will be sent to the buyer whilst a child in the developing world will receive the second machine
The G1G1 scheme, as it is known, will offer the laptops for just two weeks, starting on the 12 November.
"From day one there's been a lot of interest expressed in having some way of people in the developed world participate in the programme," Walter Bender, head of software development at One Laptop per Child (OLPC), told the BBC News website.
It packs several innovations including a sunlight readable display so that it can be used outside. It has no moving parts, can be powered by solar, foot-pump or pull-string powered chargers and is housed in a waterproof case.
The machine's price has recently increased from $176 (88) to $188 (93) although the eventual aim is to sell the machines for $100 (50).
Governments can buy the green and white machines in lots of 250,000.
Personally I think that lot size is too big.
So anyone want to sign up for the G1G1 plan?
Enjoy.
