Note to Schrafinator, John, and Quetzal
Anyone who is in the same room as Robin Williams is obligated to try to hurt and/or kill him. Don't get any blood on Audrey.

What about if I just slip a tranquilizer into his drink?
I like Robin Williams; have you seen One Hour Photo? He does the "creepy social reject" very well.

Huh?
Um, no... I didn't even know he had a forum. I just admire his work - especially The Authority.
Ok so now you guys know my dark secret - I'm a serious comics fan...

Yeah, it's gone now though.
Authority's really fun, but I like Planetary and Transmet better.

Hey, I'm a cartoonist in real life. So don't go apologizing on my account. Hell, just before I posted this I was making plans to meet up with people at the Chicago comic convention.

Am I a bad person because I like Japanese comics better than American ones? It seems to me that, despite being a visual medium, American comics rely too heavily on text. Not that I don't like to read - quite the opposite - but when pick up a comic I want blow-me-away pictures, and a little less "Here's the skinny, faithful readers!"
Not that I like every Japanese comic - most of them are as churned-out as American comics - but the best of the best seems better, somehow, than what America has to offer.

Is this a dead topic yet? In no paticular order:
The hostess choice seems like a foregone conclusion by now, but in order to moderate this Algonquin Round Table from Hell, she'd need more than silver-screen sparkle. Who better than razor-tongued monologuist/actress Ann Magnuson?
If his chronic stomach bug ain't acting up, Charles Darwin has to attend. I won't ask him whether he's glad to be remembered as the author of the most important scientific theory of the nineteenth century rather than as an inept naturalist.
I want Ornette Coleman to provide stimulating musical accompaniment for this shindig. I'm dying to meet the man credited/blamed for modern jazz.
Author Lucy Ellmann wrote the scathing novel 'Man or Mango?' and, judging by her Guardian columns, should be a scintillating conversationalist. Members from the UK are forgiven for being disgusted by this choice.
Since Ms. Golightly wouldn't be present, my Holly of choice would be literate rocker Holly Beth Vincent. (Polly Jean Harvey has no address and Chrissie Hynde would no doubt object to the menu.) Holly was the patron saint of the oblivious long before that Cobain guy.
Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to get his opinion on Ornette, but Ludwig van Beethoven was a musical revolutionary in his own right. The Eroica gets me up in the morning. Just ask my neighbors.
William S. Burroughs is my favorite author, but don't let him sucker anyone into doing the William Tell routine.
John Lennon can't hold his liquor as well as Ringo, but he's welcome as long as he's, uh, unaccompanied.
Pop culture iconoclast Michael O'Donoghue would be no stranger to high-concept soirees. He could always do his impression of other guests having steel needles rammed into their eyes.
Last but certainly not least, let me invite Chuck D from Public Enemy. I doubt the conversation among this bunch will reach a cozy consensus at any point, considering how many forthright contrarians I seem to have set places for. But Chuck will come in handy if someone doesn't take the hint when the party winds down.

No, there's a lot of good Japanese comics out there. The problem a statement like "Japanese comics are better" though, is that we forget that only the good stuff (or at least the high-selling stuff) finds its way over here. The vast amounts of crap put out every week over in Japan never get translated, so not so much digging has to be done to find good manga in America.
As far as American comics go, we do have to deal with the crap. And there is a lot of crap to wade through. But once you do the digging, there's just as much gold over here as there is there.
Okay, I could babble about comics for about twelve pages, and that would derail the thread. But if anybody wants to start up a
"reccomended comics" thread (maybe in the book forum?) I'd be happy to post up a list of wonderful reading.

Crap
Sturgeon's Law applies
When Ted Sturgeon was approached by someone and told that "90% of that science fiction stuff is crud!" His reply was: "Yes, ma'am 90% of everyting is crud."
That is Sturgeon's law and applies to comics of course.

I'm surprised nobody thought of inviting Darwin AND Wallace..just to cause a heated argument over who came up with the theory first

Let's not forget that Lord Monboddo theorized about gradual human evolution a century before Darwin & Wallace presented their papers to the underwhelmed Linnean Society. Of course, he also believed that babies were born with tails that midwives were obliged to remove. But hey, if I need to invite a mad Scot to my shindig, there seem to be plenty of the sort at this website. Top up the goblet, Brian? More neaps, Peter? Check your pockets for silverware, Wounded King?

Lol... now that you have me thinking about celebrity death matches...
I hear Newton was quite an irritable chap. Wonder how he'd react to having Albert tell him he was wrong?
