prejudice
Why not just judge people by the way they look instead of the way they communicate? Its an easier form of prejudice.
Hmmm. I think that both forms of prejudice come rather easily to me. I am not sure it matters which is easier. You do?
I am curious to see where you mean to go with your assertion.
Cheers.
Post Script: I can see where the use of shorthand could be viewed as pretentious; I am guilty of using "ABE". I will do so no more.

No, "Post Script" is pretentious ... (are there really people that don't know what "ps" means?)
If you ever replied to someone who has then edited their post to change what you replied to, you will find a certain confusion ensues.
Of course you get the same kind of confusion when someone's screen-name (SN?) changes, so you are addressing "relative" but the post is by "simple" ...

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I just meant that I would spell out "Added by Edit" when needed rather than using "AbE".
Considering how little I post here the change is going to be rather insignificant.
    Cheers.

    P.S.
I have read somewhere that it is a mark of a poor writer when one has to use smileys to convey humor.
If true, one mark against me.
The "Post Script" was meant to be humorous. I'll use the smileys until I can take the training wheels off.
I hope you are not mistaking me for simple!
    Cheers.
Edited by Michael, : stupid grammatical error

I have read somewhere that it is a mark of a poor writer when one has to use smileys to convey humor.
And I always thought it was punishing phrasing.
Until I find a way to convey facial expressions in a convenient enough way that it doesn't detract from the discussions ... (the difficulty is when you try to use irony or sarcasm and the recepient just doesn't get it ... such as pretending to be overly pedantic)
The "Post Script" was meant to be humorous.
See the problem? Of course I think there are people who "know" what "ps" means but not what "post script" means ... know what I mean?
I hope you are not mistaking me for simple!
    Hardly.

I have read somewhere that it is a mark of a poor writer when one has to use smileys to convey humor.
And I always thought it was punishing phrasing.
It is an inchoate cry for liberation, the graphical medium convulvsing to throw off the sullen bonds of text.
I think of smilies more along the lines of mugging the camera or softening a remark.
We make faces when we say something tastes bad--is that the mark of a poor speaker? We smile and touch our friends when we tease them, even though they already know it is all in fun.
Graphical, tactile, textual...we communicate simultaneously in all kinds of ways in our daily lives, duplicating or even contradicting our spoken words with glances and gestures. In online communities we are using text in a relatively new way, more "live", more distributed, more potentially communal; faster and hotter, yet somehow less physically intimate--I tap my keyboard but I caress my books.
Perhaps it is a tribute to the intensity of web communities that we seek those multiply channeled, productively redundant, and more nuanced communications here.
OTOH, me, I just like to make faces.

    Re: stuck up
Being a physicist, more often than not I have to think long and hard to explain certain things in physics to people in plain english, so I know what you mean. Sometimes, some things are lost once certain concepts are translated into plain english.
When I wrote that sentence, I was referring to lazy writing, not complex writing. Look at my posts in context, man.
Edited by rgb, : Fixed redundant sentence... trying to be perfect.

aim ancronyms evolved from online gaming. Ever play an RTS, or even look at computer gaming forum? theres no time to write stuff up!They have ancronyms for everything. Lets not even get into l33t.
    hf-have fun
    b/c-because
    w/e-whatever
    ect.

-I believe in God, I just call it Nature
-One man with an imaginary friend is insane. a Million men with an imaginary friend is a religion.
-People must often be reminded that the bible did not arrive as a fax from heaven; it was written by men.
-Religion is the opiate of the masses

    SPOOYA: a request for Ifen
This was a new one on me which Ifen used in one of the Galapagos finches threads in reference to Ray's comparing Gould to a holocaust denier ... or something, to be honest Ray's point seemed to be a bit askew.
My guess is that it refers to a 'Statistic Pulled Out Of Your Ass'.
Could Ifen fill us in on the correct derivation?
