Many conservatives come on to this board talking about "The Leftists" and "The Far Left" in American politics. Often, they point to people Like Senator Clinton and John Edwards to illustrate the "left-leaning" nature of the Democratic party, and Dennis Kucinich is completely dismissed as a "radical" on the left. Words like "Marxist" has even been bandied about on occasion by posters like Faith.
I am sure you are all aware of the Political Compass website, as it has made the rounds several times on this site and lots of us have completed the questions and seen where we fall on the spectrum. The following is a view of the ideological category of each of the presidential candidates based upon their expressed campaign platform and their own publically-stated political views.
These results, you must remember, are based upon the worldwide political spectrum. Here, Clinton and Edwards are considered by many to be left-leaning Liberals, but compared to the rest of the world, they are firmly in the Authoritarian Right Wing conservative category, perhaps slightly libertarian. Gravel and Kucinich are slightly left-leaning Libertarians, compared to the rest of the world. I am not surprised, since I am well-aware that the US is an extremely conservative place politically and has been slipping closer to Authoritarianism and Fascism in recent decades, but I wonder how many of our conservative members are equally surprised? They may be, but not for the same reasons I am, I'll wager. AbE: Just did the test again. I am a left-leaning Libertarian. Economic Left/Right: -6.25Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -8.31 Apparently, I score very close to the Dalai Lama. Cool. Edited by nator, : No reason given. Edited by nator, : No reason given. I think it was my support for mandatory school attendance that kept me from going off-scale.

Three years ago I scored near the lower left corner:

Former U.S. Senator from Alaska Mike Gravel is running for President? Wow! (And, yes, I do remember him, as a matter of fact.) Edited by Chiroptera, : No reason given. probably. that's okay. we're the dangerous left. we're gonna sit in and conscientiously object them to death.
but seriously. there is a vocal minority of lefties. but they're on the internet and they forget to vote. the majority of this country is falling off the right cliff. and in the mean time, we have this imaginary spectre of the evil commie left which you and i encourage with our extremism. of course, we probably vote differently than we e-quiz.

True. I vote for the person closest to my philosophy who has a snowball's chance of winning. Edited by Omnivorous, : No reason given. Real things always push back. -William James Save lives! I'm hoping a candidate will have a fugue and just start telling the truth. I'm not holding my breath. Still, come election day, I'll vote for bad rather than worse.
