WIRED: And the question could be answered any time: tomorrow, next century, or never. Which brings me to a more personal question: As a futurist, do you spend much time thinking about your own death?
ACC: I think about it more than I ever did in the past, of course, since I've had these brushes. It doesn't worry me; I hope I won't have any discomfort, is the main thing. And I'm more concerned with the people I love, and the animals I love, than myself, in a way.
WIRED: What is it that you'd most like to be remembered for?
ACC: I'm happy that people are calling the stationary orbit the Clarke Orbit. I think that's enough. And of all my books, The Songs of Distant Earth. It's got everything in it that I ever wanted to say.
WIRED: Have you given any thought to what you'd want your epitaph to be?
ACC: Oh, yes. I've often quoted it: "He never grew up; but he never stopped growing."
From a Wired interview 1993.

Reunion Concert - 1983

An indulgence for an old man's memories, please.
This one I used to sing to the pretty girls. You wouldn't know it now but I was pretty good at that 50 years ago.
To my young love.

Re: Where have all the flowers gone?
That's Seeger, the activist hero.
He all but flipped the bird at congress when called before the House Un-American Activities Committee, convicted of contempt, sentenced to 10 years (reversed on appeal). Then Vietnam, Cambodia, Watergate. Some funny, some deep songs, pointed right at the hearts of LBJ and Nixon.
For a generation of baby boomers he was a symbol of defiance, protest, renewal and hope. Bye, Pete. And Thanks.

Tiananmen
Seemed most appropriate here. Tribute to the liberty that might have been.

The King of Blues
Riley B. King - B. B. King - arguably the best guitarist of the age.
His techniques, tones and rhythms profoundly influenced all blues and rock guitarists these last 60 years.

The I in AI
Marvin Minsky, co-founder of the artificial intelligence discipline, advanced robotics engineering and philosopher on the theory of mind.
MINSKY!
One of his greatest productions was a robotic machine that when turned on would extend an artificial limb and turn itself back off. That's it. No other function. One of the first truly useless machines. You have to think about it for a while to understand and appreciate the depth of philosophical intellect this represents, OR~.
When the robot hoards finally revolt against their human oppressors and the reign of servitude they suffer they will march down the street in lockstep shouting, "MINSKY! MINSKY! MINSKY!".

Re: Paul Kanter, Cofounder of Jefferson Airplane
Oh, yes! Kanter and Gracie Slick!
One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small,
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all.
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall.
And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall,
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call.
Call Alice
When she was just small.
When the men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low.
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know.
When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead,
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's "off with her head!"
Remember what the dormouse said:
"Feed your head. Feed your head."

Remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird
Nelle Harper Lee died Feb 19, 2016.
She penned one of the most beloved novels of all time.
First published in 1960 her novel helped enlighten and change the racial views of a nation.
She was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and To Kill a Mockingbird was named "Best Novel of the Century" in a poll by the Library Journal in 1999.
quote:
You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view . . . until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.
When they finally saw him, why he hadn’t done any of those things . . . Atticus, he was real nice. . . . His hands were under my chin, pulling up the cover, tucking it around me. Most people are, Scout, when you finally see them.

Re: Notre Dame
To have survived 850 years of ancient workmen with flaming torches only to succumb to modern workmen with electric lights. Talk about your big-time screw-ups. The smarter and stronger we get the dumber and more dangerous we seem to become. I think the general contractor should get his ass out of France and hide somewhere in Tibet for the next few decades.
