Re: Gene Wilder
A quick Kangaroo Hop this evening, I think, by way of tribute.

Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

My favorite Gene Wilder movie was The Frisco Kid

A horrible person, but she had significant impact.

Rudy Van Gelder (November 2, 1924 August 25, 2016)
It has been said, "The greatest jazz recording engineer ever". I certainly won't argue.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudy_Van_Gelder

quote:
Regarded as the most important recording engineer of jazz by some observers,[1] Van Gelder recorded several thousand jazz sessions, including many recognized as classics, in a career which spanned more than half a century.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Gelder_Studio

Take a scan over the list of recordings at the second link. And I suspect the list might be a fair bit incomplete.

Re: Phyllis Schlafley

I never met her, so I don't know if she was a horrible person.

I disagreed with her, and I got tired of hearing her voice. But she fought for what she believed in.

What she won in the legislature (the defeat of ERA), she has lost in the culture at large. Hillary Clinton as a presidential candidate illustrates the point.

Indeed. In actuality, much of the extreme right views have been thoroughly repudiated in the new millennium. Women's rights. Gay rights. Trying to get prayer back in school. And of course, the recent court cases on Intelligent Design.

Note that her son Andrew Schlafly, is still very active with conservative causes. And he runs Conservapedia. Although it's effect is marginal nowadays.

They always called his diehard fans Arnies Army.

now they have a charitable organization! Arnie's Army

Good stories in that link!

To me, Arnie represented the glory days of America...a time now lost.

When blacks had to sit in back of bus? Gays were beaten up? The US was overthrowing and destabilizing countries?
Yeah. Good times.

Facts don't lie or have an agenda. Facts are just facts

"God did it" is not an argument. It is an excuse for intellectual laziness.

Non-Great Jack T. Chick gone
I remember being bombarded with those tracts everywhere as a young teenager, even though I just had a basic misunderstanding of English... I used to laugh at the name, though. I knew what jacked chick meant!

I came to appreciate his music only lately, but liked it very much.

Sorry to hear of his passing...
