quote: oooo, you knew about inseam-less, as well? How about half-chaps? I still own a pair of those.
quote: Yeah, it is a great phrase! All of those double 'esses'. I have a manager at work who uses the phrase as often as he can, too. He's a card. Of course, at work I have, on two separate occasions, slapped his behind, as well as made a reference to my having sex with a couple of ponies which were on the propery at the time. I have a really different workplace than most people, I think.

Weren't you just the one complaining about the association of riding gear with sex? Believe me, I love to here about your ass-slapping adventures in beastiality land, it just seems a bit strange given your previous comments. But don't stop on my account...

quote: Absolutely not - I'm dubious about the idea of "reclaiming" stereotypes anyway, and am of the view that it mostly comprises pandering to said stereotype rather than challenging it. But bitch was a term of abuse before it passed out of rap into the mainstream as referring to a pimps bitches. That sense of bitch passed right into the mainstream - demonstrating that this statement of dominance and ownership did not get a rough ride from the main stream at all. And now this is so widespread that "not being so-and-so's bitch" or similar sentiments are commonplace. If feminism had any grip at all on our popular culture, this should have been resisted. But it fact it was welcomed and disseminated with anti-PC glee. The idea that world is overrun by interventionist feminists is so absurd that I regard people who advance the claim as paranoiacs. Probably the single greatest effect feminism has had on mainstream pop culture was the semi-removal of the Miss World cattleshow.

The difference is, of course, that this was a national magazine that had their facts completely wrong, compared to some individuals goofing around playing "can you top this?" in an office.
Remember, this equipment doesn't have sexual connotations within the sport. Saying that it does is very inaccurate. I am well aware that people have "exported" the equipment for sexual use, so much so that it has become part of the popular culture. The author of the magazine article "imported" the sexual imagery back into the sport from the popular culture notions, which was silly. Hi contracycle,
I think the effects of feminism on popular culture can be discerned from the ease with which "bitch" passed into widely-used acceptable slang: that is, pretty much nil. First of all the impact of feminism isn't limited to culture. The idea that women should be allowed to have jobs, to vote, etc. now seems pretty mundane but this is a profound achievement of feminism only in the last century - so the impact in economic and political arenas are more impressive than the cultural. In any case culture (in terms of rap music, TV shows, etc) is pretty much dominated by rich white guys anyway and its the easiest place for them to hit back against the real achievements of feminists. A lot of pop culture is completely fake (rich white capitalist men fear blacks and women, so they promote culture that makes blacks out to be criminals, and women as whores). Watch a movie by a feminist director from algeria or egypt and you will immediately realise that north american culture that is supposed to be culturally feminist, i.e. that show supposedly strong women - I mean sex and the city, etc. - watch a movie by one of these women directors from egypt or algeria and you'll see what a joke north american feminism becomes when it's incorporated into safe mainstream entertainment. north american and much european "culture" (Tv industry, pop industry, fashion industry) is a whore in itself. notice that these are all cultural arenas that are operated by a very specialized elite, not "normal people". They're the industrial production of corporate culture. Why be surprised when this kind of culture is racist and sexist? mick

"Bitch" has another connotation entirely that you are ignoring; one of being strong and true to your own personality without apology to those you offend along the way. If you haven't heard "bitch" used that way, perhaps you leave your computer desk for awhile, (or at least download some episodes of AbFab to watch).

Thats the old usage of bitch as a not-too-offensive term, rather like "bastard" for men. I already acknowledged it had an existing career as an insult. I'm not talking about the word as an insult; I'm talking about it's post-insult use as a compliment (quite different from not-too-offensive). As I see it the "reclaimed" version of the word bitch has nothing to do with the "ho" connotation that you claim is that version - Taking a derogatory term and using it in a different derogatory way doesn't even qualify as reclamation. I have a few friends that I call "bitch" occasionally - it has absolutely nothing to do with degradation, ownership, or my mad pimpin' abilities. When I use the term it is referring to their strength in staying true to themselves despite what other people think - it is a compliment, not an insult.
