The important link is to the message. You can list the forum and thread without using links if you want.
Here is how I did one in the POTM thread.
I first browsed to the article. Then I looked at the url I was using (check what the browser says). The url contained, among other stuff, "f=32" and "t=23". Those give the forum and thread number. I found the message number (187) by just looking. I then used
[forum=32]
[thread=-32,23]
[msg=-32,-23,-187]
Note that the "-" in front of one of those numbers suppresses the particular information (forum title, thread title or message title).
The alternative is to browse to the particular message, use your mouse to select the url your browser is using. Then with cut and past you can insert that into a "url" definition
