Re: hacking? only when I cough.
Yes, the culprit is in the link in the topic title.

Re: hacking? only when I cough.
So is this now fixed or is this topic effectively unavailable for reply?

Re: hacking? only when I cough.
I think that an Admin, maybe even the Admin, will have to fix it.

Re: hacking? only when I cough. - Problem seemingly fixed
Fixed, I think. Removed link from topic title. Posted test message, complete with grammar error in subtitle. This seem to be working correctly.

Upcoming Birthdays Bug Fixed
Either the entire membership of the "My Birthday is March 28, 1983" club joined, or the database was somehow corrupted and caused 293 members to have their date of birth set to 3/28/1983. I've set the birthday for these members back to the null default, so if you were actually born this upcoming Wednesday 24 years ago, you'll have to go to your profile and set your date of birth back to March 28, 1983.

So many bugs/glitches
1) It just made me re-log in, even though everywhere showed I was already logged in.
2) Server seems to be operating slow. Why does it seem to do this whenever I'm trying to get a bunch of adminning done? Also, maybe this is related to mpb1's 3 duplicate PNT's.
3) There has been at least 2 instances of messages being posted but not actually making it to the topic page. They do show up on the "All Topic" page. See http://EvC Forum: Glenn Morton hypothesis: The Flood could ONLY have happened 5 million+ years ago and EvC Forum: Is evolution of mammals finished?. My subsequent messages took over the previously used but not posted message number. Related to #2?
4) I merged the MartinV account into the Martin account. The message number for Martin seems correct, but they do not show up at Martin's message index. I tried doing a "Update Member Message Lists" at "Board Centeral", but kept getting a "Internal Server Error" message. Related to #2?
5) I'm currently at the veterinary clinic, and there's a really annoying whiney dog. OK, this one's not Percy's problem.

Added by edit: OK, Martin's message index now seems correct.

Re: So many bugs/glitches
Our server is subject to periodic attacks by spammers who co-opt the server by dumping huge numbers of spam emails into the spam queue. I don't know how to prevent this, and our web hosting company feels no responsibility to provide protection and wants $150/hour to fix it.
When such attacks occur, the server slows to a crawl because it begins a new process for each spam email, and with over a thousand processes vying for the processor's attention, thrashing causes most of the processor's cycles to be devoted to switching from one process to the next.
With such frequent context switching, the likelihood increases of stumbling across holes in the semaphore protection that prevents process interruption during critical activities, such as assigning the next message number. It also makes it more likely to run into timeouts that kill a process after a fixed number of seconds, which is what causes the "Online now" list to occasionally get corrupted.
Moving to our own server has been both a curse and a boon. The downside issues are few, but this one is particularly severe when it strikes.

New post not Showing up in All Topics
This is a new one.
My recent post seems to exist on that thread, and it is listed on my profile page, but when I look at All Topics, it lists the most recent post on that thread as Quetzal's previous post.

Re: New post not Showing up in All Topics
Same thing still happening in the "Gravity Does Not Exist" thread despite an attempt by Admin to fix. I'm also having difficulty putting new posts up.

Re: New post not Showing up in All Topics
I've now done a "Rebuild Forum Data" three atimes for the "Is It Science?" forum. It fixes the problem, at least for the moment.
I'm also having the problem that a message will post, but the page posted from will not change from the message creation window to the posted message. But the message is indeed posted.
I also tried to do a message edit at the topic in question, of one of my own messages. It just wouldn't work at all. I actually went to the "Board Central" profile edit pages and checked to see if some wise guy/gal admin had turned off my editing privileges.

Another disappearing message
ArchArchitect posted message 20 at the "The Bible was NOT man made, it was Godly made" topic. I briefly saw it, and then it was gone (no message 20 at all). Now, a message by Ringo is message 20.
I was doing an edit on ArchArchitect's message 18 when this happened. Perhaps that has something to do with the glitch.
Adminnemooseus
Added by edit: At least for the moment, message 20 shows up as being from ArchArchitect at ArchArchitect's message index.

Check out the editing date on kaders PNT here.
Edited by Kader, 10-05-2007 11:03 AM: No reason given.
Is that a Bug or what?

Date formats and time zone considerations
The problem is, the date and time of the message's original creation is in the date format and time zone of the reader, as set up in the individual profiles.
On the other hand, the "edited by" notes are reported in the date format and the time zone of the person doing the editing.
For the date, I see the U.S. format of "5-10-2007" (M-D-Y) and the European(?) format of "10-5-2007" (D-M-Y). Despite the fact that I personally use the M-D-Y format, I do recognize that the D-M-Y makes better sense.
For the time zone thing - Suppose the message creator is in a zone 2 zones to the west of you. It is 4:00 pm for you, but 2:00 pm for him. He creates a message at 4:00 pm (your time) and then edits it an hour later. The message creation time (on your browser) is listed as 4:00 pm (your time zone time) and the edit time is listed as 3:00 pm (his time zone time). Seemingly, the message was edited an hour before its original creation. That's the situation I'm seeing - Message created at 1:00 pm and edited at 12:03 pm.

It really helps moderators figure out if a topic is disintegrating because of general misbehavior versus someone in particular if the originally non-misbehaving members kept it that way. When everyone is prickly and argumentative and off-topic and personal then it's just too difficult to tell. We have neither infinite time to untie the Gordian knot, nor the wisdom of Solomon.
There used to be a comedian who presented his ideas for a better world, and one of them was to arm everyone on the highway with little rubber dart guns. Every time you see a driver doing something stupid, you fire a little dart at his car. When a state trooper sees someone driving down the highway with a bunch of darts all over his car he pulls him over for being an idiot.

It wouldn't bother me as I never pay attention to what date or when i do something....I simply do it. The purists would be horrified, however!
