Volunteers are being sought to take over the Picture of the Week. You'll be provided an HTML outline into which to place a link to an image and the accompanying text. Images can be from anywhere on the Internet, or you can scan in your own images, but in that case you'll have to email me the image so I can upload it. Images should be topical or seasonal. Topical images can be generally related to the debate, specific to a certain aspect of the debate, or specific to a currently active thread. Volunteers reply to this thread.

And I'll volunteer Lam three, if he'll remember to go looking at the Hubble Space Telescope site and its cousins on occasion. And if he'll tell us who that remarkable person with the sword is....

Despite the fact that I'm gay, she somehow caught my heart. Unfortunately, she's just out of reach. That doesn't prevent me from keep dreaming about it though. The Laminator

You're elected!
I'll send you the format and a couple examples this weekend. You send me an update whenever you're ready (doesn't have to be once a month, you can change it to once a week or whatever you feel like), we'll do a review/revise loop and then I'll put it on the home page. Thank you, Lam!
A hearty thank you goes out to Lam for his first Picture of the Week contribution on our Home Page. I gave him the option to make it Picture of the Month, but he retained the Picture of the Week title. I guess we'll find out next week whether that was oversight or on purpose! Thanks, Lam!

Well done for taking this on, Lam, and for at last letting us have a new picture. I particularly like the way you link the picture to a current debate. I also hope you'll be chaning the picture again soon. Would it be a problem for the storage capacities to have a picture archive? Not to be a wet blanket, but I hope you'll be changing the picture because I don't actually like this one very much. Of course, it is intended to be a bit confronting, and we thrive on disagreement, so I still think it is a good choice. But one problem is that the re-use of the "iconic" image of progression in human evolution, which is misleading in some major respects. In fact, Jonathan Wells singles this out in his list of "icons", and uses it to illustrate his book Icons of Evolution. (I'm not endorsing the book; it is rubbish.) The image used is very well known in popular culture; and reflect a very common misconception about evolution... that evolution is above progres. In fact, not all the species shown in the graphic were human ancestors, and the notion of sequence misses the essential evolutionary aspect of diversity. Quoting the talkorigins fossil hominids pages ( link):
Is there a copy of that "March of Progress" image on the web? This famous graphic shows a sequence of primates walking from left to right, starting with small knuckle-walking apes, graduating through a series of ape-men, and finishing with a modern Cro-Magnon male. It was drawn by Rudy Zallinger and first published in Early Man, a 1970 Time-Life book written by paleoanthropologist F. Clark Howell. It has become a cultural icon, endlessly copied and parodied. However, the original drawing is not on the web as far as I know, although some derivations of it are [links omitted]. The drawing often creates a misleading impression of human evolution as a steady progression from apes to humans. It has always been known that not all the species in that series were human ancestors (for example, the robust australopithecines). Are you taking suggestions for future images? I hope you'll be able to give as a good astronomical image some time. There are some amazing possibilities, and I am sure if you requested permission it would be forthcoming. Some images are given in press releases, and I presume can be used freely. Cheers -- Sylas

Re: re-bump...
New picture of the week... or month coming very very soon. I just had a car accident. That's the only excuse I could think of right now. The Laminator
