brennakimi from another topic
brennakimi writes:
see. paragraphs are made of sentences. sentences are supposed to have a subject, a predicatory verb, and then modifying words which describe either how the verb predicates or how the noun exists. i distinctly recall a few exceptions in his post. four leaf clover or no.
Source
Off-topic there, but on-topic here ("pot calling the kettle black" department?).
I say: Sentences are supposed to have a subject, a predicatory verb, and then modifying words which describe either how the verb predicates or how the noun exists, and should start with capital letters.
The capital letter part is so easy. Why not be courtious and use them?
Adminnemooseus
ps: Subtitle starts with lower case, because brennakimi chooses to have her ID to start with lower case. I have no problem with that, although I often upper case such IDs anyway. Someday I may even alias minnemooseus into Minnemooseus.
Edited to fix link to correct message number.

Why not be courtious and use them?
laziness.
also, in some older languages, two different cases just don't exist. and in some, they're just used very differently. for instance, my signature has letters of two cases: consonants and vowels.
the word "case" itself comes from the printing press, although capitalization itself is older, dating back to middle if not early english. the capitals were apperently contained in the UPPER case and rest in the lower case of letters.
and of course, some would argue that lower-case lettering is easier to read, because of the ascenders and descenders, or something.

Re: The "shift key impaired" are starting to piss me off!
hey, people are talking about me!
Hey, Arachnophilia is studying the original Hebrew Torah,
no, not quite yet. still working on learning hebrew... i'll be taking a hebrew class this fall.
The benefits of capitalization have probably just escaped his notice as being such a minor improvement compared to the space bar and the puncuation keys.
heh, sort of. but it's really just laziness. i don't like typing with my pinkies. when i write papers for school, however, i do certainly use capital letters in their proper places. i consider it the difference between formal and informal speech.
also, your sentance should look like this:
klstsprthtwrtdrqrbdlhsststnrnalclbbknthaylltca
ghnadgswtafanmatwrtsaddntnahwhyywthsasthylrlcscbsth
gnthmosylbbrpsantcnptastnwhwhywhbtsmtanthssmrf
ntlvafayrththdnastsrvnatdltascthwpamcnts
i've added line breaks out of curtousey, since it won't wrap properly right-to-left. but no spaces, no vowels, words that start with vowels replaced with "a" which is a consonant.

Re: The "shift key impaired" are starting to piss me off!
I've always enjoyed Arach's content and respected his contributions and have learned a lot from his posts and never even noticed lack of capitalization.
thanks!
My point is that it could be a whole lot worse, a whole lot. It doesn't bother me at all, but then I grew up loving the poety of cummings.
no, i'm just not 1337 3n0u64.

Re: brennakimi from another topic
that's nice. see but it's a style thing. artistic licence. i know the rules; therefore, i can break them, just like ee cummings... though i do not claim to be as talented. i find capital letters unnecessarily ugly and difficult to read.
IF YOU LIKE, I COULD DO THIS. BUT I MIGHT HAVE A HEART ATTACK AND DIE.
be happy because my punctuation is pristeen.

Yeah, Jar picked up on the vowels and the left to right bit. I dashed that off and I'm not versed in Hebrew at all, but I think I made my point that in the great scheme of written works lack of capitalization is not an impediment to comprehension. It just turns out that the Bible is even harder to cipher out than I imagined.

well, hebrew does have two cases: consonants and vowels. see the little dots below the hebrew letters in my signature? those are the vowels. they are written that way, so as not to intrude on the text in holy works, since the originals didn't have the vowels. the earliest hebrew manuscript we have, the masoretic, DOES have spacing and vowels and line breaks. so if i wanted to write similar to the masoretic,
SiTH eKiL GNiTHeMoS KooL DLouW TiA
granted, i can't get the vowels actually BELOW the consonsants, but it's still really distracting in english.

Boy is this really interesting but also OT
However,
it's an important point and I'd even like to see a whole thread on it.
In addition to the below chracter notations, we need to remember there were also marginal notations in many cases, just to keep things interesting.

see but it's a style thing. artistic licence.
I could also invoke "administrative artistic licence". But wouldn't need to, because I have forum guideline #1:
Follow all moderator requests.
My request that members use proper capitalization is most reasonable. The vast majority of forum members do such, without requiring any special request. Even Brad does.
Bottom line: Right now I could go to most any message from any of the "shift key impaired", and do a suspension because of a forum rule violation. RAZD might first need a formal warning, but both brennakimi and Arachnophilia have obviously already seen my request.
