Hear, Hear!
Thank you Sylas, for a well balanced statement. Sometimes we need to gently tolerate one another's foibles. I apprecatiate the fundamental sanity of your post. I have had trouble remembering to not capitalize (in protest) but I really didn't notice Arach or brennakimi's lack thereof. Their content made complete sense to me. lfen

Maybe the people who don't use caps are annoyed by having to reach all-the-way over to the shift key. personally, it's just a pinky-finger thing. i tend not to use them, or at least like using them. not totally sure why. i use them to cut and paste (always the left hand, curiously) and for html-style brackets. but not parenthesis exclamation points or ctrl-z's. when i somehow use my ring finger for the shift key. thank god for the [ ] ubb/db brackets here!
It just happens automatically for me so its no problem, but if they have to think about pressing shift everytime, I could see how that would be annoying. it's oddly gotten to the point where i generally don't think about it. and come to think about, i don't on proper academic papers either -- my word processor capitalizes automatically.
But, when I read something without caps, the voice in my head doesn't get quieter, so it doesn't bother me a bit. yeah, that's sort of the way i figured it would be. although it was really weird to see sylas post in all-lowers. lol

Fine - The majority seem to have spoken.

Have you considered taking a break from the forum? The tone of your posts seems to be increasingly petulant (or I could just be reading something in them that is not there).
Maybe take a week off? Your function as an Admin seems to be hall monitor - that can get pretty tiring after a while..... This message has been edited by Charles Knight, 21-May-2005 05:36 AM

Gasby asked a question concerning "lazy writing"
gasby writes: has the issue of lazy writin come up befor.... cuz some peeple just dont seem too care enugh to type in the extra leter or put in the aproprat puntuaton makr or put in at leest an unce woth of extra efort to write coheran sentenses After reading one of NewYorkCityBoy's posts a thought hit me. Is this the way people are typing when they send text messages? Since I don't do texting, it wasn't the first thought on my mind. The next question would be do we want to discourage the "texting" style of typing on this board?

The next question would be do we want to discourage the "texting" style of typing on this board? Yes! I think that the appearance of our text is important. i don't like abrv sentences.

It might work fine on a mobile phone where (I think) the responses are propbably more one-liners, but on a debate board where we type paragraphs I don't think it is appropriate.
Too difficult to read, especially if you're not someone who uses text messaging.

I am typing this message on a PDA cell phone.
Some options aren't available to me, such as forming quote boxes. (The characters needed for the codes aren't all available.) Still, it's possible to create a decent message with suitable spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. I can even spell the word 'because' in its entirety. Amount of time it took to type this message, including proofreading: 3 minutes. _ Archer All species are transitional.

With internet connection on mobile phones I wondered if some members interact through their phones and not at a full size keyboard.
You don't type your long posts on a PDA do you? So our familiar quote boxes aren't possible, but all the letters of the alphabet are available and basic punctuation. Good to know. "Peshat is what I say and derash is what you say." --Nehama Leibowitz

It could be worse, people could be writing in ?? speek.
Couldn't figure out the one word. I definitely hope no one starts that "style" of writing. "Peshat is what I say and derash is what you say." --Nehama Leibowitz
