In fact, there are seven ERVs between humans and chimps...
If you understand the O.P. and what ERVs are, Refpunk, you will know that there are two possible explanations for these seven ERVs.
(a) Common ancestry of humans and chimps.
(b) Magic is at work.
Common ancestry happens. Siblings have parents in common, and first cousins have one set of grandparents in common. Intelligent scientists think that the first explanation is the most likely. You, Refpunk, presumably prefer the second.
How often have you observed magical things happening?
Do you still believe that Santa Claus brings presents at Christmas time, or have you grown up?

Re: A suggestion to Refpunk
Refpunk writes:
Thus, chickens don't turn into pigs, giraffes don't turn into elephants and monkeys don't turn into skunks, zebras or humans in reality. All any evolutionist has to do is explain why those things don't happen and they will see why evolution is impossible.
If any one of those things happened, just once, it would disprove the Theory of Evolution, Refpunk.
So, if you "know exactly what evolutionary biology endorses", as you put it, then could you explain to us all why I made the above comment.
Sorry about being off topic, Molbiogirl, but I think that, considering how far he's got in 30 years of schooling, Refpunk is probably slightly more likely to give birth to a zebra than he is to ever understand what an ERV is.

Re: ERV pattern evidence proves evolution

I've noticed that when I have brought up ERV evidence in other threads that it is ignored by creationists.
No surprises! I've brought them up on a number of occasions, and noticed the same thing. So, a couple of times I've made provocative claims, like saying that they conclusively prove our common ancestry with the apes (and monkeys) on their own without need for other evidence. No creationist has bitten.
Elsewhere (not on EvC), the best attempt I've heard of was a suggestion by a creationist that there are "hotspots" on the genome in which they insert themselves, but that's easily dealt with (I'll do it if someone takes up your challenge).
Here's a funny illustration of how the problems and implications of ERVs are essentially avoided.

I love the title. (The ones that have actually clearly been selected for function were, of course, inserted by God at the moment of creation. )
