Sounds like the ball is spinning at right angles. Ozzies not even bad enough to touch it.

Three wickets for two runs - a good summer to be an English cricket fan :-)

Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Re: Surprise
Cricket was bigger than baseball in the U.S. until around the time of the civil war.
Ouch. That is indeed faint praise.

Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. Thoreau: Civil Disobedience (1846)
I would say here something that was heard from an ecclesiastic of the most eminent degree; ‘That the intention of the Holy Ghost is to teach us how one goes to heaven, not how the heaven goes.’ Galileo Galilei 1615.
If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightning. Frederick Douglass

Well we won. Frankly it was a bit too easy. I obvioulsy want England to win but it would be nice if the Ozzies put up a bit of resistance.
What with tennis, rugby, cricket and cycling I'm a bit lost as to how to react to all this British sporting success. It's all very unnerving.

What a great pub quiz question.

The Canadian cricket team in the United States in 1844 was the first international team to travel to another country and the match between the two national sides that year, billed as "United States of America versus the British Empire's Canadian Province", was the first official international cricket match.[1] The match took place between 25 and 27 September 1844 at the St George's Cricket Club, Bloomingdale Park in New York.[2] Canada won by 23 runs. The game was watched by between 10,000 and 20,000 spectators and around $120,000 worth of bets were placed.

299 To Win
England have set Aus 299 to win in the final innings of the 4th test. With two days to go (rain allowing) this must be a result match.
Can Aus pull off a remarkable victory and maintain some chance of at least drawing the series?
Or will England make it 3-0?
The smart money must be on England. But those of us who have lived through England's darker times will probably never be able to quite rid ourselves of the nagging doubt that comes from repeatedly seeing your team repeaetedly snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.....

60 for no wicket.
Australia are motoring.
Is it time to start praying for rain?

Re: Straggler explains cricket to Oni
I've been teaching my 7 year old son how to play cricket recently because he's been asking me about this ashes stuff I keep watching on TV and listening to on the radio. We roped in Mrs Straggler to do some fielding (i.e. ball fetching). She's Argentinian.
Trying to explain the rules of cricket to an Argentinian woman turned out to be the very definition of impossible. Even our barely-lingual-only-just-out-of-diapers 3 year old had a better grasp of what was going on than she did after an hour in the park. "No mama. No like that."

No need to panic yet, it just needs a couple of wickets and everything changes.
